Magnet Swap on a PAF .... ( 2 ) quick questions please about magnet orientation ?

Hi all

Firstly, thanks to everyone for their advice on my previous post here:-

https://forum.seymourduncan.com/showthread.php?t=201411

With thanks to addiction-fx on eBay, I just recieved:-

- a pair of UOA5's
- a pair of Ceramic 8's

By the way, addiction-fx was super friendly, super quick and super helpful to deal with - dont hesitate to buy from addiction-fx.

As I dont have a polarity tester, addiction-fx kindly marked the NORTH edge of each Magnet for me.

To My Questions:-

On my 335, the Exposed Pickup-Pole-Screws on the Bridge Pickup are on the Bridge side of the Bridge Pickup and the Exposed Pickup-Pole-Screws on the Neck Pickup are on the Neck side of the Neck Pickup ........ so ........

A - should the NORTH edge of the magnet face the Exposed Pickup-Pole-Screw side of the Pickup *or* the Flat-Non-Pole-Screw side of the Pickup ?

B - provided the NORTH edge is facing the correct way, and given that the TOP and BOTTOM on the Magnets is NOT marked, does it matter which way the Magnet is flipped ?

Many thanks,
Ben

Take out the magnet and keep it perfectly aligned how it was in the pup. Hold the new magnet next to it lengthwise. If it attracts then the polarity is the same as the removed magnet, and you just place the new one in as is. If not, flip and install.

Most humbuckers are North for the slug coil and South on the screw coil, regardless of position. If you flip a humbucker around in the ring without re-wiring it it'll still be in phase. So you want the screw coils the same polarity.

If you're changing both it doesn't really matter as long as you do both pickups the same way. If you're changing out one, do like AlexR said above, or, if you want to make sure it matches the other pickup, bring the north edge of the magnet near each coil of the other pickup - the one that repels will be north as well.

Oh, and there's no real "top" or "bottom" to the magnets - either way will be fine.

If the magnet is unoriented then I wouldn`t think it would matter how you put it in ??

The 'unoriented' word refers to the composition 'particles' of the magnet, the magnet itself IS oriented.

Ben,
Here is what I do: I loosen the 4 base screws about 1/32-1/16". I then 'pry' (ohh so gently) the baseplate away from the rest of the p/u that 1/32-1/16". I don't remove the black tape, but kinda 'pry' (again very gently) it up enough for the mag to come out. I know some remove the tape, but I don't want to have to replace it later......just me. When you do this, one end will reveal small wires, one end will be wide open (on the Duncans I've done so far, the tiny wires are on the opposite end of the p/u from where the leads go up into it, the p/u slides out the same side as the leads go in). Being very careful, take a tiny flathead screwdriver and push the mag out a quarter inch or so (watch those tiny wires....the screwdriver may have to fit between then). I then take needlenose pliers and pull the mag about 1/2 way out. I mark the old mag, while it's still 1/2 way in, with a sharpie.....just in case. It is at this time you can take the new mag, orient it as stated above, and mark it with a sharpie, too. If you get it oriented wrong, it will sound ok by itself and really weak when combined. It's not a disaster, but a pain in the neck to do it a second time for no good reason.

Thanks for the clarification ! ! , guess I took the unoriented TOO literally,,,lol.

If you don't have magnetic poles, you don't have a magnet.

As simple as that.

Re: Magnet Swap on a PAF .... ( 2 ) quick questions please about magnet orientation

Take the old magnet just half way out and put the new magnet next to it. The small sides should repeal and the big sides should attract. Just like this:

1 - old magnet going out of the pickup
2 - new magnet going inside the pickup

1''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''2
______________''''''''''''''''''''_____________
______________|''repel'''|_____________|

---------------> '''''''''''''' <----------------
going out '''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''''going inside

Good luck

ps: I inserted the quotation marks instead of blank space, because the space were being supressed...

Could placing the magnets to each other in these ways degauss or have any ill effect on the magnets?

Re: Magnet Swap on a PAF .... ( 2 ) quick questions please about magnet orientation

Nope, it would take prolonged exposure for that to happen.

Oh and one tad bit of advice once your done with the mags don't leave them next to a tuner or remote or anything that might get messed up being next to a magnetic field. I made the mistake of leaving the mags once I was done with them next to my tuner woke up the next morning went to use my tuner thing would not turn on even after I replaced the batteries.

No; it actually helps to maintain their magnetism if you stick them together for storage.

Re: Magnet Swap on a PAF .... ( 2 ) quick questions please about magnet orientation

But when they repel?

Then you have a P90. They seem to work fine.

The point is that if you force two repelling poles together, each with a similar amount of magnetism, no ill effects will come of it.

I do like to stick the same 'grade' of magnets together for that purpose. but I do not stick magnets together that are not the same type. I don't even put UOA5s next to regular A5s or RCA5s. that might be a little on the cautious side.

Re: Magnet Swap on a PAF .... ( 2 ) quick questions please about magnet orientation

Sorry , don't mean to hijack the thread, but what UOA5 and RCA5 means ???
Thank you!

+1. As long as they're attracting, not repelling, you can store any mix of magnets together for any length of time. There's nothing to degrade the magnetic power.
