Magnet tonalities

I've been reading alot of threads about magnet swaps and would like to know the differences in tone from one magnet to another, especialy the A4,A6,and A8.I also would like to know what a Sreamin' Demon would sound like with an A8 and the hex screws swapped for regular screws.Any info would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Re: Magnet tonalities

I've got a Demon with all regular screws, and two half-sized magnets (an A5 under the bridge coil, ceramic under the neck coil), and it sounds way thicker and overall "better" than the stock Demon. Swapping out the hex heads for regulars takes away a lot of the shrillness.

BTW, the guy who did the magnet mod thinks it's probably similar to an A8 magnet.

Re: Magnet tonalities

How much more mids does the A8 add to the sound of the Screamin' Demon? The descriptions of the Custom8 sound pretty cool too,are there any clips of these pups?

Re: Magnet tonalities

A8 will add a crapload of mid and bass and overall output to any pickup. It's good for a high output pickup that sounds harsh with ceramic.

A6 adds a lot of bass and mids -- especially mids -- but is a little dark on the top. If you want some serious honk in your bridge pu and can afford to give up a little top end, A6 is for you. Outputwise it's between A8 and A5, but closer to A8.

A4 is extremely smooth and sweet, like a slightly louder A2 but with a touch more bass.

Re: Magnet tonalities

What could I put in a Humbucker From Hell to get higher output without darkening it too much.

Re: Magnet tonalities

The Humbucker From Hell is a Dimarzio with A5 magnets and is around 5.7k. The idea being an ultra bright and clean neck pickup that is supposed to sound like a single coil. In reality since it is so weak that when used in the neck position it really doesn't sound that bright and everything in the bridge position overpowers it.

Re: Magnet tonalities

A5 and 5.7k??? Yikes! -- you sure you don't mean 7.5k?

If it is 5.7k, time for a rewind or a new pickup!!

Otherwise, give Alnico 6 a try.

Re: Magnet tonalities

Nah it's wound that way on purpose. It's meant to dummy a single coil tone, and it's not trying to be a humbucker at all. It's also got mismatched coils, using their dual resonance patent. So it's not as wimpy as 5.7k suggests, because it's a break from the overall design altogether. It's not two 2.75k coils. I don't know what the breakdown is, though.

Alnico 6 is a great recommendation though, Zhang.

Alnico 8 in a Demon gives excellent results ; more ouput , more low mids that beef up the whole bottom end and smooth the top end .
And the string attack is still round and clean , with more beef .
