Magnets for '57 Classics

I dont care for '57 Classics in their OEM form so I'm wondering which magnets work to bring them blp0 m.hto life. As is they sound dull and lifeless. Which magnets make them keepers?

There is something special with the 57 on their winding pattern. A magnet change doesn‘t help as much as with other pickups. This wooliness sounds great in some semi-electric guitars like ES 335s. I have one 57 that got one coil rewound, but it did not change its foundation.
My advice: If you don‘t like them, you better sell them for good money.

aajeffcote You could try lowering the pickups while raising the adjustable polepieces. Also, Gibson used Alnico 3 magnets in a limited-edition version of these pickups. That might be worth a shot.

Gibson pickups sell for a premium on the used market. You could sell them and get a new set of Duncans or Dimarzios and not be out much cash, if any. If you find the replacement set used, you'll easily come out ahead.

IMO it's best not to mod them. Get something you actually want.

I agree with previous comments, you might be better off selling them and buying some good Duncan pups.

That being said, you actually could try a different magnet to liven it up a bit. I never thought of the 57s being dull and lifeless, but now that you mention it perhaps that isn't a bad description. If anything, my main complaint about them was that they sounded a bit thin, (and perhaps lifeless). You could try putting in an A8 and see what you think. That will give it a tighter, stronger bass and bigger highs which would be a bit punchier and brighter but still not as shrill as you'd get with an A5 and definitely not as shill as a ceramic mag.

I am on 'team sell', too. Modding 57Cs aren't talked about much because they are worth a lot unmodded to people who like anything Gibson. What, EQ-and-power-wise are you looking for? What kind of music, and what's the rest of the rig?
