mahogany RG pickups

Re: mahogany RG pickups

How do you think a duncan distortion set would sound?

i can definitely hear the distortion working in the bridge if the testament vid is what you want!

maybe something else for the neck though.. i can't put my finger on what though.. what does petrucci use?

PS- your second video is bust according to my browser? and petrucci's pickups are custom wound - if anyone's got the specs list them and we can have a shot at the closest pickup!

bear in mind the 'liquid' lead tone thing is 70% your amp choice.. what are you using?

Re: mahogany RG pickups

Petrucci uses a modified Air Norton, I'm definitely going with the Distortion for the bridge, but like you said, I can't figure out the perfect neck pup to compliment it.

My choices so far:
Air Norton
Distortion Neck
Dimarzio Super 2

Re: mahogany RG pickups

air norton might well work! or a tone zone or something.. dimarzio's tend to cater for the ultra-modern liquid thing.. i'd say the distortion is too articulate and not hot enough to do the liquid thing..

maybe look at vai? his neck tone can be very fluid!

Re: mahogany RG pickups

full shred in the bridge, i look for the same tones as you, i just put a full shred in my ibanez sz sounds great, not super hot like a emg81 but sounds good and clear for leads and cleans, and really good for heavy riffing, i am thinking of getting the neck model or a alnico pro 2 for the neck. for more of a bluesier neck pickup.

Re: mahogany RG pickups

Yeah, I'm not looking for a real modern liquid tone, more of the 80s shred/metal type lead tone.

that line alone screams DM super distortion in the neck to me!

it was like the standard 80s metal/rock tone for a lot of people!
