Main issue with Bridge pickup too close to strings

I'm dialing in the new JB Jr I just added in the bridge position of my strat. What are the most common problems caused by the Jb Jr pickup being too close, especially on the low E side? It seems like I've always had some issues getting a clean tone on the low E string at higher frets, but right now I detect some of that in the lower frets.

Re: Main issue with Bridge pickup too close to strings

Loss of definition, and unbalanced volume with the other p/ups are the big ones.

Re: Main issue with Bridge pickup too close to strings

Seems like loss of definition and I'm not noticing fret buzz. Could be what they call Stratitis ---- I'm not really concerned with balanced output levels from the pickups because I have so many ways to compensate for that. The tech that installed my Everything Axe pickguard adjusted all three for equal levels when in coil-split. ( Lil 59 neck, Duckbucker middle and Jb Jr bridge ). Lowering the bass side of the Lil 59 helped so I'll try that on the Jb jr

Magnets kill vibration. It ends up making warbling sounds, wolf tones, and sucks the sustain right out of it. It can also distort and be ultra hot.

Almost always better to have really hot pups farther away.

+1
Years ago I recall seeing people crank their pickups up to where they were almost touching the strings when you fretted the position closest to the bridge. I imagine that was to get the most output from the stock vintage wind pickups. That was back in the late 70's/early 80's when there weren't many people making or using aftermarket pickups or other gain boost options.
These days, there is no reason to have to do that to get a decent push to one's sound. But old habits die hard.
Adjust your pickups to where you like what they sound like.

You might also hear little clicky sounds as the larger strings vibrate into a magnet that is too close.

Re: Main issue with Bridge pickup too close to strings

I doubt you’ll have any magnetic issues from a pickup with the magnet on the bottom. That’s a problem with alnico pole singles, usually in the neck or middle. I’ve run an Invader bridge with three ceramic magnets almost touching the strings, zero effect on sustain or tuning.

IME, pickups that are set too high have a weird tone that is hard to e.q. to sound good. It's like they're too muddy and too stiff at the same time. Fix one of those issues, and it exacerbates the other.

Once you hear that sound, it is easy to recognize. I put the pickup high enough until I start hearing that sound, then back it off.

Re: Main issue with Bridge pickup too close to strings

That's the best way to get it as close as possible,,,,,,,set it too high and back it off until you hear the tone open-up again.
Check all the strings when fretted up high on the board also. (24th or 22nd) You'll easily hear the warbling sound when it's too close.

Re: Main issue with Bridge pickup too close to strings

string pull from a bridge pup with small bar magnet underneath will be minimal even if it is almost touching the strings at which point the string physically hitting the pup is more of a concern

This.

I tried it about 2 weeks ago. 3 out 8 guitars were too high.

The 6th and 3rd strings are most effected. Lower your bridge pickup until they sustain like the other 4. Adjust the other pickups to balance.

Re: Main issue with Bridge pickup too close to strings

Without getting into the advice to "adjust the pickup height to where it sounds best"..... what are some actual numbers people out there are using for the JB Junior and the Little 59.... If you have a duck bucker mention that one too

Re: Main issue with Bridge pickup too close to strings

I lowered all three. One "spec" calls for 3/32 inch on the high E and 1/8th on the low E. I'm now nearing twice that distance, pickup pole piece to string and it's sounding much better. Having run low output Lace Sensor Golds for many years, I'm surprised how hot these pickups are -- never encountered this particular sound/issue.
