Making a lapsteel from a tree in the back yard and spare parts

An ash tree died at my grandmother's place in the country. So i cut the trunk off to use for a lap steel guitar project.

- Using TOM bridge and a humbucker.
- a very short scale... depending on how long the piece of wood is.

That could end up looking pretty nice. Very interesting looking grain. I like it. Keep us informed (with pics) on the progress.

My Oahu is 25" scale, Kalamazoo is 22.5" scale. Keep us up to date.

Got some spalts too :cool2:. What kind of hb will you use?

Awesome dude!

Can't wait to see how this turns out.

Did you split that log with a hand saw ?!? (if so ... how's your shoulder feel ?)

The spalting looks good. What type of wood is it?

after measuring it, i have enough room for a 22.5 or 24". not sure which one i'll use yet.

i should have cut it closer to the base and gotten more of the spalt. i should have known better, since it died and actually fell over.

either an F spaced GFS A2 classic, which i would stagger.... or a PG+ not staggered... it will be split regardless.

i started with the bow saw and broke the blade pretty quickly. haha. then i finished with a chainsaw.

i'm like 98% sure it's ash.

You are now officially the most bad-ass dude on this forum.

I mean seriously ... building a guitar out of an old tree you cut down yourself? That is ultra-bad-ass.

Spalted Ash. Beautiful! Is it completely dry? Might want to be sure before you start. Got a moisture meter?

You're making the rest of us builders look bad lol! I have to go cut down a few trees now I guess.

Thats what I was wondering myself. Could you bake the wood like gibson does with their baked maple fret boards?

I'd be more inclined to sticker it and let it dry naturally. But that'll take a little time and you're probably wanting to get started. But there may be someone who does re-sawing of raw lumber in your area with a wood drying kiln. Or if the tree has been dead long enough it might be pretty dry. Maybe stick it in your hot attic or barn for a few months with air flow both over and under it...that's called stickering and you just use sticks.

Hardwood is usually kiln dried (which is not the same as baking) before it gets cut into a blank. It's also quite often left to stabilize for months.

It's wet as hell. It's only been dead a few weeks, and it rained all weekend. I need to find someone with a kiln, because it would be 4 months before it's hot enough to start drying naturally.
