Making/keeping a Maple Neck Slick?

Alright, I have a dilemma. I love my Jackson, but the finish on the neck kills me. I love the gloss finish on my Schecter, it always stays smooth and is never sticky, but the Jackson tends to get stick and not as smooth. It's a bolton maple neck, and I tried using a very fine grit sandpaper to sand the finish down a bit, and that works, but only for about an hour. How can I get the Jackson to feel like a gloss finish without taking it to a luthier of sorts?

You could shave the neck....

...I've played a few axes with sticky necks...I can't stand them.

Sounds good. How often will I have to do this? Or is it a one time deal?

Re: Making/keeping a Maple Neck Slick?

is there anyway to make a maple fretboard smoother, more silky, slick...?

and btw, is there any special brand lemon oil or 0000 steel wool? or just supermarket stuff? we're talking pure lemon oil? whats the best place to procure this stuff, and best brands?

The incredibly smooth neck finish is the thing that makes me want to get a Music Man sometime. Those necks feel so good to play.

dunlop makes a great polish for those bolt on necks with a finish on them. I want to say dunlop 440? something like that. anyway if your down to a natural wood finish all i can say is oil, but i dont know wich kind is the best as I have never had a natural wood finish on a bolt on neck before. Ive only had the standard strat or gibson laquer finishes on my guitars. :beerchug:

I use 0000 steel wool & lemon oil also, but I'm too lazy to remove the neck & hardware. I also oil the rosewood fretboards occasionally.
As far as brands, I've been using Formbys, but I've had the same bottle for about 20 years (a little bit goes a long way) they might not be in business anymore lol

If you're up for it, carefully sand the neck down to bare wood and spray a few coats of http://reranch.com/ satin finish nitro on there. I tried to post an exact link, but their URL is apparently the same for every page. Check out "Products" and then "Order Site". They also have great instructions. The stuff feels like raw maple, but still protects the wood.
