I am making my first board ever. Im looking at this board BOSS BCB-60 for convenience and budget. Is there any reason I should not get this one? Im gonna use all boss pedals anyway and a wah :)

Re: Making my first board need advice

Provided that all of your pedals are either BOSS compact or Twin models (or other brands that adopt the exact same dimensions), they should fit tightly into the foam sections.

As you can see, the BCB-60 is intended to house all of the pedals in one chain. This might prove inconvenient if you require some pedals between the guitar and amplifier (e.g. Wah, Comp, Uni-Vibe) and others in the amp's effects loop (e.g. Time and most Modulation variants).

Re: Making my first board need advice

So in the long run, its better if I just make my own? Its so damn expensive to :P

Re: Making my first board need advice

Also, would it be smart to just buy as big as possible to begin with? Im probably gonna experiment allot with pedals..

Re: Making my first board need advice

I don't think excessive pedalboard real estate is a common problem.

Re: Making my first board need advice

In my opinion, you should begin by deciding which pedals are absolutely essential to the music that you will be making. Next, decide where in the signal chain each device sounds better. Finally, decide how to accommodate your pedals. Ideally, try to have a spare place or two on the board(s), just in case the collection needs to grow in the future.

No, cause you keep buying more! My "small" board (PT Mini) has grown to have a wah and volume off board, as well as Univibe and Flanger! Not very "small" anymore...

Buy a silver briefcase style camera case. You can get them all over the place for not a lot of dough.
Inside the width is usually around 16 inches.
Go to your local hardware/timber yard and buy a few lengths of decking timber.
Cut them (or maybe the timberyard will cut them for you) so that they fit inside the camera case.

Lay 3 of them alongside each other and then put a couple of short ones underneath and then cut them to size. Something like this small board i made (i made the pedals too :) ):

Then just use a couple of nails woodscrews to hold it all together and add velcro.

This bigger board has two layers and fits snugly inside a camera case. You can see how easy it is to stack up pieces of decking to customize the board to fit what you need:

You can see how neatly the patch leads sit underneath the boards (ala pedaltrain). This board also has a dunlop power brick tucked away underneath too.

That one fitted two double width pedals and a wah. Usually you need to budget 10cm (4 inches) per pedal if you are going to use chunky right angle plugs so with this style of board you should be able to fit at least 4 pedals across the board, but of course you can always stack it up and make a second higher tier if you want to fit maybe 8 boss pedals (or maybe 6 plus a wah).
If you want a small power supply, the pedaltrain volto will fit underneath even the small board in the first pic if you buy some rubber feet for the board.
The other great thing about these is that you know they are strong enough to stand on...they are decking boards after all! And of course once you sand them down smooth you can paint them in whatever colour you like.

I certainly can't see anything wrong with it if the price is right. A case like that with attendant power supply would suit my needs just fine. I suppose it all depends what you are going to put in it as far as pedals go.

This would be the best yes! Great board! But its not gonna happen ;)

Re: Making my first board need advice

If all of you here could post your pedal boards please :D

Here we go again...

The signal chain is tuner>light OD for compressed cleans>Medium OD for anything from blues to pop rock to classic rock> Distortion (ADA into Marshall-like) > volume boost for solos > chorus (subtle) > delay.

This board does all I need, and is very easy to use.

A tip for you guys The Marshall Gv-2 is a great pedal for fattening up your sound without changing your original sound. It has a deepswitch on it, its a really cool pedal.

Re: Making my first board need advice

The Boss BCB can be pretty useful, I used one for a few years and always had some pedals going thro@ the front and some in the loop. I always used the the boards power supply to power one the pedals into the loop and a Strobo/ Polytune/ TU2 to power the pedals into the front. I never had any ground loop issues or problems although I never had any real power suckers on the board. Here are a few of examples of what I ran. Note the only weak point was the plastic lid locks which were quite easy to break!!

Hello Op [waves]

I once thought as you did. The issue with a "brand name" ready made pedal board like the Boss is that whether you know it now or now, you are going to evolve and change your pedals.

Just google the term "Ikea Pedalboard" and you will find a million affordable ideas and not all of them even involve Ikea.

Some good buddies of mine outgrew their positions at the guitar shop they were working at and finally opened their own place a couple of years ago. One of the services they offer is custom pedalboards and I (privately) shake my head every time someone comes in with a backpack full of pedals and wants a board done. That same board is going to be different two months from now.

Either way...enjoy your first board and enjoy the journey. There is no one answer for you here. You must sing YOUR song...now ours.

Take care,

~LD
