Has anyone checked out any Mako amps?

Take a look at the website:
http://www.makoamplification.com/

Here's some info from the website:

Andrew Solner
Owner & Proprietor
info@makoamplification.com

That's right, just one dude makes it all- woodwork, winding transformers, soldering, janitor, etc..

New shop address:

2646 Palma Drive Suite 285
Ventura|California|93003
805.650.TONE
805.650.8665 fax

And now to his amps:

Currently he has four heads, three combos and two cabinets on offer.
He has a new 4 channel 100watt head in development:
The Mako MAK 4.

There are no specs on the website but this is what I found out:

*100watts
*4 Channels:
Same tones as the Custom Hundred Watt plus the 4 th
channel called the Grinder. It's way over the top with gain and bottom
end.

Channel one is completley clean(Fender type),
Chan 2 breaks up a bit,
Chan 3 is pure rock,
and Chan 4 is extreme.

*The channels are independent,
each with a loop and switchable boost.

*hybrid construction using some
printed circuit board technology with standard turret board layouts.

*1/4 jacks on the rear panel to hook up to
an external midi switcher. It comes with a 13 button footswitch.

*5881 power tubes
*tons of knobs

There is a small picture of it at the bottom of this page:
http://www.makoamplification.com/products_head.html

The price will be around $3500.

So people, have anyone heard of Mako amps before?
Anyone ever tried one?
Speak your mind.

From what I'm reading on Mako amps, it looks like you struck gold. I wish they actually had the specs on the main site, but it definitely looks very promising.

Re: Mako Amplification: The Mako MAK 4

I have to admit, I'm pretty intrigued by these Makos. The name and look of them isn't very sexy, but at least they look like worthy tonemonsters. I like the way they're constructed. The chassis looks well built and they kinda remind me of Wizard amps.
Since they're in Ventura, they're only 20 miles away from me. I'd like to hear all those heads. The problem with 'new' is that you'd lose bigtime on resale, but if it was a keeper, you'd have a great amp that may not be in production for the longhaul. It was similar with the Blues Pearl amps I had. Great amps, but the company folded after a couple years. If I found one of these used, I'd jump on it. Or, if Mako offered a cost deal endorsement, I'd think it's worth that amount. If we're talking $2500 +, I'd stick with Bogner. I still wanna check them out, tho. They look like they'd sound great.

all i know is, mako is kind of shark and by the specs of that amp it sounds promosing.

Re: Mako Amplification: The Mako MAK 4

I'd have to hear'em to know which model I like best, but I know I love the finished wood version, not the tolexed ones.

It didn't sound that great from those sound clips. I hope for the money they're asking, that it's better, JMHO.

The first sound clip blew me away. The one which is called "Sorry this sucks bad". It was very impressive.
But generally sound clips fail to impress. You have to hear the amp up close to be able to give a verdict.

I am definitely going to get one or two Mako amps in the future.

Re: Mako Amplification: The Mako MAK 4

To be honest, I never even click on soundclips, almost ever. If a Line 6 can sound spectacular and a Matchless can sound like dog crap, you know there's a lot of variables in those clips. To me, they give a slight idea of the tonality, but nothing like standing in front, or even recording it yourself.

Plus, real wide open sounding amps with very little compression always tend to sound ratty in soundclips. I have a feeling these are real wide open sounding amps like old Marshalls, Hiwatts, Budda's, and Wizards.

Re: Mako Amplification: The Mako MAK 4

Andrew Solner is pure genius. His old shop was next to Bogners for years.
I'd hit both shops when I'd go there.
His amps carry a waiting list of a year minimum for those in the know.
He really makes it all by hand and hand winds his own transforemrs. The quality will make you cry. Reinhold Bogner stated that the 2 channel head should cost 4000 instead of 2500 based on parts. Andrew is as dedicated as they come but slow. The tones are hella good and the heads feel great. His 4x12 cabs are killer. He falls into the "best kept secret" file. Pretty amazing guy to do all that by word of mouth. Plus he's maybe 30 years old. Makes me feel like a slacker ha, ha....so I hate him for that reason,j/k. He's a cool guy for sure and totally approachable. Awesome amps. I can't afford one now, and I feel dumb for not picking one up when they were cheaper.
