Man, I wish this Custom Shop pickup was a production model....

Oh, I forgot about the premise of your OP. No, it's not a custom shop model that I'm aware of, but still. I've decided I'll pull the trigger on that thing sometime in the future. Will be a cool pickup to have for posterity.

For me, the Slug.

What's funny is that the El Diablo, Slug and Silverbird set could all be done as regular "production" models. They already use the same bobbins for the Rickenbacker bass pickup and that's a production model, even though it has more custom parts to it.

I seriously think SD is missing out on opportunities by not offering more (and especially older) Custom Shop models as production options. Like I said, have an "Elite" series and charge a little more while simultaneously saving the Custom Shop for truly custom stuff, you know?

If I want an "overwound" '78, that's a job for the Custom Shop, but don't inundate Derek and MJ with 500 requests for the same ol' basic '78 model, when the production line can bust those out easily! For those very few who absolutely insist that MJ puts her lovely paws on their pickup, they can still order it directly from the CS, but that's going to be relatively uncommon.

I haven't ever used a 78...what am I missing? Is it something that someone not particularly into EVH would still find use for?

My '78 Model is like a Pearly Gates with notably less bass. Because it's thin and bright, it's able to get that VH1 "starved plate brown sound" out of a normally overdriven Marshall, without needing a Variac to get there. It works well paired with any PAF-style neck pickup that mixes with Pearlies: Jazz, Seth, Pearly, etc. IME a 59/Custom sits in between the sound of my '78 and a normal Pearly or 59. (59 or Pearly being full, 59/C slightly thinner, '78 thinner still.) I think the '78 would also make a great neck pickup for any high-powered bridge pickup. It's bright with attenuated bass.

I can attest to the Ric bass pup, (with converted base), to be the perfect El Diablo neck pup.

Can we include "Custom Shop" stuff that isn't on the web site but you could probably order and they could make somehow? (You dream it, they can make it.) I don't see why there isn't a Jazz Jr. single-sized PU. (Unless I'm missing the sonic equivalent in the current line-up?). I read threads here about the same topic, but people were saying there's nothing from Duncan and the DiMarzio ProTrack was closest, though reading the DMZ site, I would have expected the Cruiser or FastTrack to be closer.

SH9 set has to come back. One of the best pickups SD has made but they simply canceled. cancel culture, avant la lettre? ;) it's got a meaty, powerful tone in series, like a hotrodded PAF but it's got a split tone to die for.

I've always been curious about the Silverbird; then I missed one that was for sale a year or two ago.
I know a regular mounting ring needs to have its opening enlarged to fit the Tele-sized bobbins.
But can it fit in a standard humbucker rout? There was some doubt in the only review I could find.

I would like to buy a Pearly Gates plus to put in the bidge position of a Strat. So far my favourite bridge pickup is a PAF PRO, but I'd definitely like to try a similarly speced alternative from SD.

I was thinking that it would be more the standard models on the Custom Shop page vs what pickups would be great to have. That can be a separate thread, though.

In that case, I wish the Charlie Christian, the Wide Range, the Concept set, the Eclair, the Staple, the Rhythm for Tele Strat Tone were production models.

yeah, it should be able to fit a normal humbucker cavity. I have it in one, if that helps? It is a bit tall but still quite workable in a regular guitar. I've had worse!

Brobucker and Crazy 8 should be production models.

On a slightly-closer-to-reality note, the Custom 8 should probably also be a production model.

Silverbird, El Diablo and Slug are all the same size. They fit in 99% of humbucker body routs, but the size fo the opening in pickup trim rings differs greatly between brands, so slight modification is sometimes required. SD also sells rings that already have small cut-outs to accommodate the wider coils.
