man, ya can sure go through output tubes in a hurry

Re: man, ya can sure go through output tubes in a hurry

Brand most definitely makes a difference, not only in longevity but in actual sound.

The most common tell-tale sign is a drop in output volume. If you notice that you're lacking bass all of a sudden that can also be a tell.

If you aren't running the amp hard the tubes will definitely last longer than if you're cranking it night after night.

what's a good brand of 6L6 ?

Howdy,

FWIW, my cathode-biased Carmen Ghia goes through output tubes (EL84s) faster than any of my Fender amps. It's kinda like being married to a Dallas Cowboys cheerleader who wakes up every morning with really bad breath; small price to pay! ;)

agreed. Nothing like a Z. Especially this model. It is my 2nd Ghia. My 1st Ghia was a combo that I traded because I could not get rid of tube rattle in the power tubes and rectifier tube after several solutions failed. No such problems with the head. Happy as a clam, really. Like that makes a lot of sense. Maybe a lark. But from everything I've gathered I need to horde me some 84s.

good to know! i was wondering why my peavey DB was farting out like when i had to get new tubes for it the first time. its only been about 6-8months since and thought it was fast but then this post cleared a lot of stuff up. not my thread but thanks guys!

... and after a day with new tubes I blew the fuse. Hope it don't mean nothin.

so sick of tube amp problems .... I wish it was the '90s again. Power tubes lasted years even in the meanest, most evil amps.

Re: man, ya can sure go through output tubes in a hurry

all seems well. With a new fuse I watched the tubes and turned the amp on. Saw purple fire right away, amp off, yanked em. Went and got the 4th set of JJs in 2 months for this amp and I'm reminded why I bought a Carmen Ghia. Played my favorite way, straight into the front and then into a single Celestion Blue. A slice of heaven. But, so it also was with the 3rd set of JJs--for an hour. Then, kaput. I've had good luck with JJs that came with an amp or were installed by a tech, like the JJ KT-66s in my Route 66, which were just as loud and bold after 5 months of steady singing. But I've never had good luck with JJs I went and bought. Crossing my fingers for the current set; last chance, Czecho!

Need a steady supply if I'm gonna need a duet of el-84s every month or two. I already have a bang 4 buck 6v6 amp. Maybe I should get a nicer one, but keep the backup for the occasional stereo usage, and simplify my life yet some more by not having such a "potential" tube-eater as the heart of my rigs. Definitely will look into the NOS option first.

Re: man, ya can sure go through output tubes in a hurry

You have an issue - there is no way that amp should be eating a set of tubes in that short a period of time.

Re: man, ya can sure go through output tubes in a hurry

well, to be fair, one set was bad. One set was the duet that was in there sitting in the store for 6 months getting abused by hippies and kids and hippie-kids. And one set has been in there an hour. So let's not count those.

So that's just one set in 2 months, and I have been ganking the knobs and occasionally slamming the front. Just to be fair.

Let's see how the current set does?
