Re: Mandatory pedals for bass!

just remember that lots of dirt/overdrive/distortion/fuzz pedals were designed for TUBE amps.

if your using a solid state bass amp like most of us are, then the best type of dirt pedal is one that emulates a tube-bass-amp. check out youtube if you want to listen to horrible sounds coming from folks using solid state amps with dirt pedals. what sounds worse than that is using multifx digital distortion pedals with solid state amp ;)

Joyo make an inexpensive one with a scorpion on it

Compressors are mostly the same

Re: Mandatory pedals for bass!

I'm putting together a bass rig for longcat and myself; currently a GK400RB with an Alesis 3630 in the loop into a fEARful 12/6 cube. I'm planning to replace the Alesis with a dbx160, and add the following pedals:

Korg Pitchblack - Since playing in tune is good
MXR Bass Octave Deluxe - This seems to be the octaver of choice these days and it sounds great
Wren & Cuff Pickle Pie B - Probably the best bass muff / fuzz I've ever heard; includes a clean blend
Darkglass Micro Tubes Vintage - Moving Pictures overdrive tone in a box; also includes a clean blend
MXR Phase 100 - A Phase 90 sounds good, but a bit thin for bass
TC Corona Chorus - We've tried a bunch of chorus sounds and like the TC best

Re: Mandatory pedals for bass!

nice setup. but I was actually asking around for the pedals which are the bare minimum. chorus, octave, flangers are nice but I would buy them after I finish the necessities

Re: Mandatory pedals for bass!

What make/model of bass guitar is involved?

Rickenbacker 4000/4001 basses benefit greatly from overdrive, distortion and octave divide.

Chapman Stick benefits from modulation when played clean and fuzz when some rip is required.

Re: Mandatory pedals for bass!

Distortion or fuzz... it's down to personal taste.

Either way, you never want to dial in so much gain that you lose your bottom end and your clarity. It's a mistake I see too many "metal" bassists make... dialing up so much dirt that you literally cannot tell what notes they're playing.

Re: Mandatory pedals for bass!

Full chords, distorted to buggery.

Tasteful, advanced melodic lines, distorted to... you guessed it!

EDIT - No points for guessing the make and model of my most recent bass guitar purchase.
