Maple vs. Rosewood

Re: Maple vs. Rosewood

I really enjoy hearing someone saying "ebony fingerboards are brighter than maple (or rosewood or pau ferro or...) When you say- "how do you know this? how can you prove this?" you usually ends up with a "it just is."

Re: Maple vs. Rosewood

This is a grey area for me honestly Lew! :laugh2: I own and use both and so it's not really a factor I guess.:13:

Yep...half of my Teles have rosewood fingerboard and half of them have a one piece maple neck/fingerboard...but I only own two Teles! :laugh2: So one of each...

But I do own about a dozen Strats and most of them have medium to light alder bodies and about half are rosewood fingerboards and the other half have maple one piece necks and fingerboards.

Maybe the maple ones are not brighter...but the rosewood ones do have a richer thicker tone...maybe that's what makes the rosewood ones seem warmer...maybe it's not that the maple fingerboard is brighter, but just that when the tone is not quite as thick (more lowere mids and mids???) it just makes the tone see brighter.

You know: leave the treble alone, turn down the bass and turn down the mids, turn up the volume and it sounds brighter. :laugh2:

Re: Maple vs. Rosewood

I have 2 strats one with maple one with rosewood, also 2 other guitars one with maple 1 with rosewood. Found that the maple fretboard has a smoother feel with slightly more attack,a nd rosewood is slightly spongier. But it depends on the wood (ash or alder) aswell because my rosewood strat sounds heaps brighter than my maple strat. I like both types for these reasons above,
