Who can explain the difference here from firsthand knowledge? Both have the same speakers, mono/stereo etc. The only difference seems to be the size, weight & price.

I have owned both. the 1936 is a MUCH deeper and bigger sounding cab than the 1922. The 1922 sounds small and pretty boxie.
I have a buddy who ownes a shop here local that has a 1922 with 75's sitting in the shop right now in mint condition for $250.
We did an A/B to my Blond Oxblood 2/12 Avatar with 75's. Both cabs were loaded with British built 75's and are about the same phisical size. The Avatar sounded big and full while the Marshall sounded small and very boxie in comparison. In a side by side test there was no contest the Avatar NUKED the Marshall!! It shocked both myself and the shop owner as I was looking at that great price and thinking about buying the Marshall! Nope bought a Red Avatar with Vin 30's instead!!
Bottom line if you just gotta have tha name buy the 1936. Now if you can live without the name and really want some TONE then forget both the Marshalls and buy an Avatar!!

The 1922 was designed to be an extension cab for open back 2x12 combo amps. The exterior dimensions were determined mainly for looks. It makes for a neat looking combo stack. Considering that the 1922 was designed for use with a 2x12 open back combo, the 1922 may well sound fine in conjunction with an open back combo.
The 1936 is essentially 2/3 the physical size and (cubic) volume of a full sized 4x12. It's intended as an alternative to a full size 4x12 for use with heads. It sounds closer to a 4x12, only not quite as loud, or such a pain to transport. A 2x12 also causes less resistance compared to a 4x12 among the "turn it down!" crowd.

I own a 1936... got it used loaded with Avatar Hellatone 60 speakers (aka Vintage 30s). I like it a lot. The physical volume of the thing give it more bottom than you'd expect from a 2x12, and it's got that "Marshall cab" sound you'd expect it to have and it rocks.
I have to admit I do miss my Legacy 4x12. It was a good solid cab and there ain't nothing like the 4x12 chunk. The 2x12 is so much easier to haul around though.
I've never played a 1922 cab... I'm no help there, sorry.

I think the 1922 has a flat front, on the 1936 the front is slightly slanted upwards. The 1936 will sound better because the increased volume inside creates more bass.
