i am thinking of getting a MARSHALL 1960B 4 X 12" cab from a local guy . it's a JCM900 from like 1992 or 1993 were these well made then or were the cheaply put together ? i am not worried about the speakers i am going to use (2)vintage 30's + (2) g12h30's or (2) vintage 30's + (2) g12 75"s the price is right and it is in good shape only a tolex mark on the side and i don't have to pay shipping !

Re: marshall 1960B quality?

from what i remember, the 1960s have the usual finger joints on the corners, and theyre pretty battle ready! if your gonna replace the speakers anyway, you can't go far wrong man :D

Re: marshall 1960B quality?

Marshall 4x12s are probably the best thing of all their product line...

Exclude the VS412 and other cheapo/smaller version, which, I *think*, are made of MDF or similar cheap wood.

You cant go wrong with them.

Re: marshall 1960B quality?

The Marshall 1960 cabs may not be the be all end all of cabs but they are a good sturdy cab that as far as i can tell hasnt really changed much I know my 1990's versions are just as good as my 70's and 80's versions.

Re: marshall 1960B quality?

cool i have a mesa recto cab 4x12" and i am thinking of selling it to get the marshall to go with my marshall sl-x head but this mesa kicks ass so i my just keep it and not worry about "the look"

Re: marshall 1960B quality?

Those cabs were perfectly good. The only weak aspect of them, if any, was the particle board back panel....the rest is birch ply, I think. I like the sound of straight cabs, but for looks, slants always have a better appearance with heads IMO.

Re: marshall 1960B quality?

I have a 1960A, very well made and sturdy with good casters/wheels on the bottom.

Re: marshall 1960B quality?

You are going to replace your Mesa cab by a Marshall?
Shurely the Mesa should be much better construction wise?! If not it's way overpriced then.
If you care about the looks try taking off the Mesa logo.

Re: marshall 1960B quality?

i think the mesas are bigger.

Birch is good wood for cabs. I made my new 1x15'' baffle for my d130 out of birch plywood, sounds great.

Re: marshall 1960B quality?

About the speaker setups you posted: The marshall 1960 series cabs come with celestion g12t75's in them.

Re: marshall 1960B quality?

i've got the 1960A, and it's been an excellent cabinet thus far. very sturdy, sounds excellent and doesn't get farty or muddy at high volumes, and + 1 about the casters...the casters on this thing can handle anything.

I actually disagree on the casters... I've had more than one of the hard plastic wheels shatter after some road monkey dropped it too hard... The best thing I ever did was go down to the army surplus and get me a set of heavy duty casters for 4 bucks and swap the wheels onto the marshall mounts... now they have good wheels and real sealed bearings... Even then the casters on my Boogie MkIV make the marshall ones cry :smoker:

Edit: Dont get me wrong the casters are decent and serviceable but if your gigging alot and too poor to have flight cases they might come up short. I swear all the guys who ever handled my gear were ex airline baggage handlers... :smack:

the mesa is nice and i may keep it but is too big for my car and the marshall will fit and match my marshall head a plus but not a big deal and the marshall is like 30lb less!

Re: marshall 1960B quality?

I have a 1960B and the cab itself is solid enough but the casters are a little small and tend to get caught in the joints between cement slabs. Since they are only held on with wood screws with no center pin to add stability they tend to get ripped off of the bottom of the cab if you aren't careful. I still have my stock casters installed but one of them in particular has been re-attached more than once. If I was using that cab out I'd probably replace them with a better caster set.
