Marshall 1965A

I have been wanting to try 10'' speakers for awhile and now I have the(possible) chance to pick up this cab. How do 4x10's do for heavy music? Think loud and sludge-y.

Re: Marshall 1965A

I've always wanted to try those too. Marshall also made a 1966 cabinet the same size with two 12's. I imagined 2 of each in an "X" pattern: 2x12/4x10 on top, 4x10/2x12 on bottom. They're much easier to carry by themselves I'd bet! Can't say I know what they sound like though..........

Thats sort of the setup I would be using. A 2x12(normal size) on bottom and a 4x10. But I need a bit more info on them before I dive in.

Re: Marshall 1965A

the bass player in my last band used an old 4x10 Marshall that was part of Alex Lifesons Early 80's stage gear... on the back was spray painted RUSH Stage Right... Alex lives near us and there used to be a music store he shopped and traded stuff in just down the road called Music Shopee or something...

My old friend had pretty much destroyed the guitar speakers with his ampeg head and bass... but it was not a bad sounding cab at all!

Re: Marshall 1965A

1965A & B = 4x10 top & bottom

1966A & B = 2x12 top & bottom

I've got a 66A & 65B (had a 65A which I ran as closed back/65B open).....they can sound HUGE !

As far as for metal, I dunno, but if you mixed it with a 2x12 the tightness of the 4x10s might really sound great. Maybe a VHT bottom with the 4x10 on top :headbang:

I've run my 65B with my Port City cab using a VHT 2902/Rocktron Prophesy & to say it's BIG is a gigantic understatement !!!!

The beauty of these 80s Marshalls are the size: 24" x 24" x 11.5", weighing in at maybe 40lbs or so loaded. :bigthumb:

Re: Marshall 1965A

I think it might be a little too tight for your tastes dude. I tried one out before I got my 1960ax, and it just didn't have the earth shuddering lows that we love so much. In combintation with a 1x15 or 1x18, it would probably be pretty cool, but with th 2x12, I think it would be a bit lacking on the doom front.
