Marshall 2104

A guy I know is selling a '77 Marshall JMP MK II 50 watt 2x12 combo, model 2104....he was about to put it on "Fleabay" but I told him, "Let's not get too hasty here, Sport!!!" :13:

I know it's completely stock except for the tolex, which he had recovered in the '80s. 6550s & Celestion 65s.........master volume.......

Anyone know anything about these? Anything special to look for??

I told him I'd stop by either Wednesday or Thursday when I'm off.

Only reason he's selling is he just built up a rack system & the wife hit the roof because he went over his limit!!! :laugh2:

That's the combo version of the JMP 2204 Master Volume head. It was in production from 1977-1981. In 1981 the JMP's became the JCM800's. These are pretty sweet amps. You can find some more info and even schematics at www.drtube.com

He can probably fetch high dollar for it. How much is he selling it for?

If it's one of the JMP metal plate ones, the heads completely rock. My favorite affordable Marshalls.

I had one..dude traded me one of my amps for it..think my JC120....I always thought it sounded like @$$...had potential..but got fizzy....sold it....dude who bought it, swapped out for El34s and new pre-amp tubes and it was the best sounding Marshall combo I'd ever heard....kicked myself for that one. Was a kid and din' know any better.

Buy it.

Well, I think he knows it'll probably get more on Ebay but he doesn't want to bother with all that.

Good for me he just needs the quick cash & doesn't want to look a little deeper into it.

DARN...and me with some overtime coming up & nothing to spend it on!!!!! :smack:

Jeff, it's funny that you mentioned he put EL34's in it. That is what originally came in those but they were changed to 6550's for the U.S. The British EL34 loaded models were Mk I's and the American 6550 loaded models were Mk II's. I'd love to have one of these amps myself.

The British EL34 loaded models were Mk I's and the American 6550 loaded models were Mk II's. I'd love to have one of these amps myself.

You may wish to look into that a bit more.

I'd get it.....but only if the re-tolex job is the right kind and was professionally done.
Then I'd have it modded for EL-34's, and put in two JJ E-34L's and 3 Sovtek 12AX7LPS

That info is straight from www.drtube.com. I may not have worded it perfectly and it could be interpreted wrong but it is essentially correct. Here's the intro of the JMP section from Dr. Tube:

"In 1967 the JMP (Jim Marshall Products) panels were introduced. In July 1969 Marshall dropped the Plexi face plates and switched to the gold colored brushed aluminium metal face plates as we know them still today.

In 1975 the Master Volumes were introduced.

The US distributor at that time (Unicord Inc.) decided to switch to 6550 output tubes in favor of the EL34's. Too many Marshalls were coming back under warranty with defective output tubes. Apparently the EL34's didn't like to be knocked about while being shipped from Europe to the US of A. Instead of fitting new EL34's Unicord fitted 6550's, thinking that these "heavier" tubes would last beyond the warranty period. This in itself was true, but many American guitar players were wandering why their Marshall amps sounded so different from their European brothers. This is probably where the Mk2 designation came from. The original EL34 amps were the Mk1's and the USA 6550 amps were called the Mk2's."

EXACTLY my thoughts!!!

I work with the guy but I've never seen or heard the amp so I'm only going by what he's told me. He's one of those people that everything has to be the best & kept in perfect condition, so I'm not too concerned with any type of deceit.

He said it was recovered by a professional upholsterer.....

For what I would want it for...Marshall crunch!!!...I was definitely thinking EL34s, but I was leaning more towards the Sovtek EL34WXTs & the 12AX7LPS....maybe a Shuguang in V1.

Also, I was thinking of making it a head instead of combo, but we'll see about that!

BTW...I'm not familiar with 6550s. In looking them up, it seems that they're the step between EL34s & KT88s, am I right?

What do they sound like...gritty or smooth like a 6L6?

And where do 5881s come in here????

I was always thinking the MKII designation was closer to the switch from P2P to PCB. But I'm trying to find documentation, and I don't have my Doyle book available! :blackeye:

I took it that the earlier models were designated MK I & then when the design differed (PTP to PCB & non-master to master volume) the new designation was named MK II.....anyone care to elaborate?

6550's basically ARE KT-88s. Cleaner, fatter than EL34's. Notable users of 66550's are Andy Summers (in JMP 2203's) and Zakk Wydle (in JCM800 2203's).

Grab that combo. Lots can be done by tube-swapping to personalize it to your taste. Or, if you don't like it just send it to me.

Yeah Man!!!

I put KT88s in my Hiwatt before selling it & in that amp.....MONSTER clean headroom!!!

This guy is a big metal head & I don't even know what tubes are in it so, I'll mess around with it for a while before doing anything.

Let me ask you this:

If you run EL34s in an amp biased for 6550/KT88s, does it just effect the tube life or does it also cause the trannies to work overtime???

I ask just for testing purposes....if I find something I like, then I'd rebias.
