Marshall 2104

Re: Marshall 2104

Yes, please keep us posted.

Why they hell can't I find deals like this?? This is not fair. :)

Re: Marshall 2104

IT'S MINE!!!

Just got back home...rocked out a bit in his spare bedroom studio. VERY NICE rack rig he's built!

Anyway, the Marshall is friggin SWEET! First time using 6550s, but it has a great tone....the nice thing is, the cab is exactly the same size my Bluesbreaker is. I have them sitting side by side right now & I'm about to A/B them.

All in all....it's a keeper!!! :beerchug:

I'll be back....................

Re: Marshall 2104

This is my 1st use of 6550s & I have to say, I digg'em!!! I know that they're basically KT88s, but can someone tell me the difference between 6550s & EL34s? I was all set to take it straight to a tech for a rebias, but I don't think I'm going to...not any time soon anyway!

I've been playing it all afternoon...A/B'd with my Bluesbreaker; Perfect compliment for each other & for the music I play. Who needs reverb???????

Got them sitting side by side & it's nice that the cabs are the same size...looks good on my "Wall of Sound" !!!!

As soon as I get a chance, I'll take& post some pics!

Re: Marshall 2104

6550's have a bit more headroom before breakup and are tighter in the low end. Zakk Wylde uses them in his Marshalls so there's a good reference to how they can sound. EL34's are grittier and have an earlier breakup. I like EL34's for what I play.

Re: Marshall 2104

congrads dude!!

tell us more!

will it do Halen if you boost it?

it must have a sweet Thin Lizzy overdrive to it. right?

Enjoy those 6550's, I've got a set of Svetlanas in mine- I've had also good luck with old GEs, Sylvanias and RCAs. If you ever get the bug to change it to EL34's make sure you try out a similar EL-34 amp before you go choppin up yours.

Congratulations!

Sounds HUGE...on 1!!!

I just played it the way it is yesterday messed around with different settings & settled on something I liked. I then A/B'd it with my Bluesbreaker(which has KT66s) & together, they compliment each other really well. DEFINITELY need to invest in another Weber MASS!!!

VH??? Oh yeah! I only play 1 VH tune (and not well! ) & it sounded great

Thin Lizzy??? OH YEAH...right outta the gate. Just DRIPS Lizzy-like tone...slap the O/D pedal on & be prepared to get knocked the f*ck out!

Thanks Bro! The 6550s friggin' smoke in this amp, so I really don't see a need to change them. Honestly, I didn't take a peek at the preamp tubes, but I've got some Sovtek 12AX7LPS I might slap in there to see where it takes me....

All in all, definite 60s/70s/80s rockin' set-up. Still thinking of making it a head & putting the cab in the closet for safe keeping.....we'll see.

I'm working all weekend, but I'm interested in opening it up & taking a peek under the hood. I'll take some pics & post'em when I can.

Re: Marshall 2104

i'm really glad you like it. Its the best slight overdrive - medium overdrive sound i've ever heard, especially if you can get the master up to at least half way. I have found that the best sounds are obtained with the master between 6.5 and 8.5.

Pre-amp tubes do seem to have a greater effect on tone with this amp than they do with my jubilee. I tried JJs to lose a bit of excess top end, but even though it did have this effect, it also reduced overall clarity. I have now put lps's inland they work superbly in it - still bright, but warm and clear as well.
enjoy.

Re: Marshall 2104

Thanks Zak! It really is a great sounding amp...and at the price, it's definitely a find.

6.5 to 8.5???? hahahaha

I had the MV set at 1 & the pre-amp dimed....FRIGGIN' LOUD!!!...great crunch though. AC/DC all the way. :13:

I'm gonna try it thru my Weber MASS this evening & see if I can arrive at a nice tone at a decent volume. I like to get atleast 6 on the master & 6 on the pre....we'll see; I'm sure I can dial in a beauty....just a matter of tweaking without the wife flipping out!!! :laugh2:

And yeah....I'm not too fond of JJ 12AX7s....maybe too even keel for my liking; they just don't seem to have much life to me, but I'm sure that's just my preference...everyone else seems to love them.

I've got RFTs in the Bluesbreaker & I'm gonna put the Sovtek LPSs in this.....should ROCK!!!
