at the moment im going through a marshall valvestate 100 head and a 4x 12 cab and was thinkin its about time for an upgrade! what are the real differences between the sound quality of an AVT 150 head, and a DSL JMC2000? is it worth saving up for the JMC2000, or should i just get the AVT150? please advise?!

Re: marshall AVT 150 or a JMC2000

There is a world of difference between those two amps, Personally, I would save up for the DSL.

I agree, try to find a used one, The reason I suggested saving for the DSL, is that was the only other amp you mentioned.

It's been quite a while since you could get an 800 single channel for $500 on ebay...

Re: marshall AVT 150 or a JMC2000

the avt150 is too much, imo. acoustic sim, effects, too much clutter. a jcm800 for a good price would definitely be better, and the dsl is worth it too. i generally find that amps with effects built in i dont even like, so i end up buying the pedals as well. its kind of like the effect sounds cool, but still crappy, so it kind of makes me want to buy stuff i dont need!

Re: marshall AVT 150 or a JMC2000

i've heard an AVT 150 through a marshall 4x12 live, then saw the next band use a JCM 2000 DSL through the same cab, and it was a WORLD of difference. The AVT couldn't even get close to the kind of marshall roar that the DSL got, he simply couldnt get the volume up to standard rock ear ringing volumes.

Re: marshall AVT 150 or a JMC2000

yeah, i know someone with an avt150

it's not really all that loud, i mean, compared to an mg100 it is, but that's about it. Plus, you get the feedback of a tube amp without the tone of a tube amp

kinda seems like a jip IMO

save for the dsl, much better amp

Re: marshall AVT 150 or a JMC2000

i agree with what someone else said about getting a JCM800 used. way better than the jcm2000. and waaaaayy more tough and reliable.

also if you are gonna save your pennies you could look into Marshall clones which alot of people in here swear by and think are much better than the originals.

check em out!

Hmm..I'm not so sure I'd say they are much better than the *originals*..but they are def better than most of the stuff Marshall has produced in the last 15 years :D

I would def save your pennies for the DSL...OR better yet...find a used 1987X RI, SLP RI ,800 series, etc..and yes you prolly are not going to find a used one for $500 anymore...alot of people are starting to realize just how good and versatile the 800s were...and also realize the new Marshalls are not in the same ball-park...

yeah those gabriel amps look pretty good. blockhead makes copies. alot of people make copies of the plexi. i really want one of them.

DSL

Well, the $500 times have passed long ago...

Anyway, you can also hi-jack the king of underrated amps: '90s JCM 900 SL-X for about $500. The sound is somewhere between the DSL and the JCM800.

Re: marshall AVT 150 or a JMC2000

Get the DSL! Only the early 800 series are good the rest sound like ****e!

Re: marshall AVT 150 or a JMC2000

i dont know, the JCM 800 is a bit too buzzy for me. I like a tamed DSL tone better.

Re: marshall AVT 150 or a JMC2000

AVT is only tube preamp, so its alot cheaper, but it doesn't give you a true marshall tone. JCM-2000 is completely tube driven. the thing roars!
