Marshall DSL50 or Laney GH50L

Been contemplating buying one of these two amps for awhile, i'm just wondering what your experiences have been with these amps. I'm looking for a heavy rock sound. I really like the tone of the DSL50, but i don't like the price tag. I'm just wondering if the Laney can do that Marshall tone, and then some. Tell me your opinions, thanks in advance guys.

I may be out of line here, but if your not set on one of these amps, you might concider a Single Recto. Single Rectos go for about $1,199.00 new and Musicians Friend has the DSL 50 at $1,349.00. I could go on about how many modes the Mesa has, the great clean, the massive distortion, ect ;) :33: :scratchch

The Recto is a great amp, but it isn't going to sound like a Marshall. If you want Marshall tone, don't expect to get it from this amp. Rectos are awesome, though!

It's been a long time since I plugged into that Laney but given the two choices I'd definately go for that over the DSL.

Re: Marshall DSL50 or Laney GH50L

I used to own a VH100R (basically a real 2 channel GH w/ reverb) and I like the DSL 50 I have now much more. I didn't like the VH100R's tone, it was rough and harsh for my tastes. The DSL is much warmer and much thicker in the mid range. The Laney did have an awsome clean channel, though. It reminded me of a clean Hiwatt.

Also, I did not trust the Laney's build quality on the VH100R. While all the tube sockets are chassis mounted (instead of PC board mounted like on low end tube amps), the chassis is very weak. I took the chassis out to bias up the amp for 6L6's (it came with EL-34's) and I noticed the metal on the chassis was a very thin guage without any side bracing. It actually bent in my hand when I took it out, scared the hell out of me. You'd think since Laney used real heavy OT's, they would make the chassis very rugged, but its not. I had a hard time getting it back in the head shell because of this.

If your guitars into a DSL50 is tonal nirvana then i think you know what you have to do.

that's right. rack-mounted amps.

The other guitarist in my band has the Laney GH50L with matching 4x12 cab. Simply awesome. Does have the marshall vibe about it. I cant comment on the internal chassis and workings, i just dont know about that kinda stuff! It appears solid, good tones and cranked it is gorgeous!

Re: Marshall DSL50 or Laney GH50L

I had a laney gh100l and it was simply too harsh for me and just didnt do any good for me even when cranked. The dsl50 is ok, a little rounder than the laney was. Ive noticed, a lot of amps which are hailed with great tone havent done it for me. I hated my Traynor Bassmaster, I hated My Laney GH100L, an I have an attenuator so cranking was never the problem. I keep going back to my peavey classic as stupid as it sounds. This think has been tweaked and modded and jsut changed by me so much that it sounds perfect to my ear. I am actually thinking I should make a PTP wired head version of it for myself to gig with. I just need to draw up schematics and check out all the mods I have done. SOrry for the off topic rant.

In short, Id go with the DSL50 since I dont like Laneys very much
