Dear all, I need some advices from your expertise, I bought a used rack mount unit – Marshall EL84 20/20 power amp. Here is the link:
http://www.marshallamps.com/product.asp?productCode=EL84-20-20

I think it has 2 channels, each one has 20W, so i can buy two speakers to create stereo sound.

Questions:

Preamp:
1) I am just wondering do any of you have suggestion which pre amp I should buy to go with this power amp? I mostly play with my strat and les paul into this amp. And I am planning to get more strat with Vintage sounds as well.

Speakers:
2) Also, I do not have any knowledge about guitar speakers, initially I want to buy two Celestion Vintage 30’s 8 ohms speakers to combine with this 20/20 power amp. But I heard someone said that I should only buy speakers under 20w, is this true? If this is the case then those Celestion Vintage 30's are not fit for it, since this speaker is 60W. Any ideas? or any good suggestion for 20W speakers?

Thank you so much for all helps and advices,

Cheers~

Re: Marshall EL84 20/20 power amp NEED YOUR HELPS!!! PLS~!!!

whoever told you to buys speakers rated for less power than the amp is losing it. you always want your speakers to be able to handle at least, if not more power than the amp put out to avoid any risk of blowing them. vintage 30's should work fine with that setup, although using lower wattage speakers, such as greenbacks (rated at 25 watts) will contribute some speaker breakup which can alter your tone, if that's the kind of thing you're going for.

is there any specific sound that you're after? us folks here will be able to recommend some preamps and speakers for you if you know specifically what kind of sound you're after, and what your budget is. in the meantime you may want to check out something like the marshall jmp-1 preamp...4 channels that can get you some decent cleans, classic marshall crunch, and can take you well into high gain territory.

congrats on the 20/20 though, sounds like a pretty good score. i almost bought one a while back when i was planning out a rack setup (but i'm too broke :laugh2: ).

Re: Marshall EL84 20/20 power amp NEED YOUR HELPS!!! PLS~!!!

Thank you so much for your reply!

I am going after the vintage sounds, I like J.Frusciante (RHCP) very much, I am going after cheap ways to make a vintage tone Strat, such as buying SD SSL-1 pickups and install them into my current Strat. And that's why i was considering buying Celestion Vintage 30s speakers.

Therefore, according to what you mentioned the Celestion Vinage 30s should work fine with my Marshall 20/20, right? Any other speakers that you would recommend for my vintage tone? And idea of pre-amp would give me that sounds?

thank you so much !!!~!!!

Re: Marshall EL84 20/20 power amp NEED YOUR HELPS!!! PLS~!!!

I am totally obessive with the sounds from JF's vintage strat, i just love the clean sound of it. But way too expensive to get one of those, therefore, I am starting to modify my current American Strat (Year 2000).

Cheers ~

Any comments or suggestions are welcome, and thanks a million in advance !!!

Re: Marshall EL84 20/20 power amp NEED YOUR HELPS!!! PLS~!!!

ONCE UPON A TIME.........

I had rack gear. :D

I once had a Mesa Boogie 20/20 (same amp with a built in fan for the impending overheating issues :( ).

I paired it up with a TECH21 PSA-1 & it gave me TONS O TONES !!!!

ALSO, if you're a Marshall purist....keep your eyes open for a JMP-1 (matching preamp) & JFX-1 (matching fx processor).

As for speakers, you can't go wrong with 2 G12H-30s :bigok:

ALSO....look for a vented top to go with that lil' sucker :D
