Marshall Guys: JTM60

I own a Marshall JTM60 (the three 10' speaker model) and I think it's brilliant. I'd like to know more about it but it's really hard to find anything on the web. The Marshall site barely mentions it. I know a little about it, when it was built, when they stopped building it, all the problems with overheating which led to the model being discontinued. But I'd still like to find out more. Anyone know anything about this amp or where I can read up on it?

Harmony Central user reviews has some good info, you have to read through the 13 year old posers and whiners, but some good stuff is hidden in there. Marshall's site is notoriously bad.

Thanks Jeff, I read through the Harmony-Central stuff (God! I love those user reviews). Found it really useful. After reading them it was the first time I turned the channel volume down and the master up. The difference is amazing. Do you know of any other sites that have more official/authoritative opinions. Like you say with Harmony Central, you have to take everything with a pinch of salt.

I have one.

the 15" speaker one and it has given me a bunch of problems but i think it sounds amazing.
really.
I have heard alot of amps and they really dont sound as good as the JTM60.
its just real warm and round sounding.
and i disagree that you need more gain. with a tube screamer in the front it rocks for Van Halen i think.

try taking a simple lead and bridging the parallel fx loop together. it will fatten the sound up alot! cool trick. try it!

i took a friends of mine strat with texas specials in it and put it in the clean channel and turned it all the way up. Vintage tone!

i really think these amp are great! just too many problems

You're right, it IS brilliant. They are great amps.

I gigged with a JTM60 2x12 combo for several years and it always totally delivered the goods. Very versatile - the best clean channel I've ever heard on a Marshall. Which isn't to say the dirty channel didn't kick arse, it's just no-one expects a Marshall to have a good clean channel.

JTM60s are excellent. :fing2:

EDIT - Yes, that trick with the effects loop is great! Put a patch cable in the parallel effects loop and you'll find the effects mix knob turns into an extra gain control! :burnout:

Thanks tone? I'll definately try that fx loop trick. I'd heard rumours that there was something you could do with the fx loop but never what it actually was. So thanks again.

Just two questions though. Does it need to be the parallel loop? And is this unique to the JTM amps or will it work with any (parallel?) fx loop?

yeah as far as i can remember it is the parallel loop. i havent done this for a while.
i dont know if this will work on other amps. have no idea actually. there are some other tech heads on this forum that might be able to explain why this works.

the amp is really awesome i think. right now i have it ready to be serviced cause it has power drops in it. actually Marshall england is gonna help me with that.

the funny thing is that i went to a shop and they had a VHT thirty and i plugged into it and it sucked compared to the JTM60. yes, sucked! sorry but i couldnt belive it either.
the VHT is supposed to be a boutique type amp as well. but it sounded raspy to me. too buzzy.

Yes, it is the parallel effects loop. The parallel loop mixes effected and dry signal and has an effects mix knob to allow you to adjust the level of effected signal against dry. There is (I think) a pre-amp tube (V3) dedicated to providing the gain for the effects mix. By connecting a patch cable between Parallel Effects Send and Return you enable this extra gain. Try It!! Just plug any guitar cable between Parallel Effects Send and Return and see what happens when you turn up the effects mix knob in the master section!
