Marshall-In-A-Box pedal for under $100?

Re: Marshall-In-A-Box pedal for under $100?

My next OD will probably be the Barber UnLtd. Awesome pedal!

They have a new one coming out--looks interesting and you might enjoy same.

Frank Lee also recently noticed that Barber has a low gain version of the Direct Drive. Looks nice. He has been unable to bond with the LTD series but loves the DD. His amp is a BF Fender, so perhaps the added mids of the 'less transparent' DD give Him the aural pleasure He feels from the Direct Drive. Frank recently tried the LTD again but likes His Analogman Silver TS9 better--it provides a groovy sweetness.

Mr. Lee (to you) likes the fact that Barber does not really try to do the 'amp in a box' thing as much as some other builders do.

Thank you.

You name an "Early-Ty-Tabor-In-A-Box" pedal and I would go $200 in a heartbeat...

Re: Marshall-In-A-Box pedal for under $100?

Thanks guys. I got some homework to do then. Lots to try out. With discussing about the two different types of jcm800 sounds (jcm800 normal drive and jcm800 with OD pushing) I am looking for a pedal that is closest to the JCM800's "normal" dirt. Not "with a pedal in front" tone.

Such a thing does not even exist. Trust me, Ive reaserached this till Im blue in the face. All the current Marshall pedal are High Gain, either Plexi or modifed JCM .
The Crunnchbox is definetley a high gain pedal. They say you can get slight crunch by dilaing it down, but its certinly not voiced to be a styraight/no pedal JCM800 -in-a- box, not a JCM which is what Ive been lookign for and you are too.,
1)Animal Rockett- late 60's Superled"plexi"with a modded Plexi and a stock plexi switch
2) MI Crunchbox- High gain modified British Brown sound to G'nR screaming cranked Marshall( presumably boosted), but this might be your best option as others have said, depending on what the "80's GnR " sound of that pedal is like?
3) Wampler Plexi Drive- JTM 45/Bluesbreaker..NOT a JCM800 by any strectch of the imagination
4)HAO Rust Drive- late 60's Full Tilt Plexi Supelead. Again, NOT a JCM800
5) Radial ToneBones London- Again, a modified High gain Marshall , not a stock JCM800..may get into cranked JCM territory though..not too sure.
6)Box of Rock- Vintage Supelead sound stock. Not JCM-800 in any way, shape , or form.
7) Marshall Guv'nor or Drivemaster. I'd say the Drivemaster is as close as youll get to a decicated stock JCM800 -in-a -box, but its out of production, and expenesive.
8) OCD- absurd suggestion..its a TS type pedal, not a JCM pedal.
9) Catlainbred DLS- I don't know anything about this, but I don't think Ive heard it mentioned as a Stock JCM800 peda
10) Duncan Powergrid. I'd just start here. Work it and get as close as you can for now. Its really a cranked British sound liek the others. Its has that dynamic reponse that might give you the flavour of a real Marshall!A great underrated pedal, especially for the price.

I disagree with the above...

If you want to get that JCM800 tone from a pedal, The Lovepedal Plexi/800 was designed for that. Does it get it?? I dunno as I have not tried one myself.

However what I have tried and can be pretty close at times to the overall vibe/feel is the Distortron with the sub switch at full cut and the gain switch at high...

Is it the same? No.

However it does have a lot of the great character of a good 800 in ways and overall is a GREAT pedal.

Also the Catalinbread DLS in the second mode is in the ball park as well...

One of the Jetter pedals is a JCM800 voiced dirt...

I'd start with one of these...

Wow..totally skipped the Lovepedal Plexi/800! . I have only heard of it, not read about it..but forgot plum about it!
My guess is its a budget pedal , like the
"Superlead" that is mostly hype, and not a really Boutique engineered pedal, like the best of the Lovepedals.
I want the original Lovepedal "Purple Plexi", but as you well know, they have been out of production for quite some time, and now are exhorbitant in price.... between 3 and 4 hundred dolalrs.
The Lovepedal "Superlead" has had a lukewarm reception. Its a budget pedal.

Frank Lee is curious. Can you please name a couple of songs with the tone you desire therein?

Thank you.

Thank you.

Thats a pretty esoteric pick there. The 'Distortron' is basically a Cranked JTM45 and has zero to do with a stock JCM800.

So nothing close to a stock JCM800 huh? I was just wondering... It would of been cool.
I'm really liking that Box of Rock. I've been watching some videos of it on YouTube, and it sounds really nice! Sounds rich. Granted, it'll probably sound even better once I play it myself. I think I saw one at guitar center the other day. Should give it a whirl.

Re: Marshall-In-A-Box pedal for under $100?

If you really want stock JCM800, get a old marshall Drivemaster used.
The 'Box of Rock' is a great pedal, but , like I said, its voiced on the old early JTm Plexis and NOT the stock JCM800/JMP Master MarkII Leads.
Both pedals( Drivemaster/Box of Rock) are priced the same used.
I'd consider the Lovepedal Plexi/800 based on TGWIF's sugegstion, although I don't know nothing about it.

Re: Marshall-In-A-Box pedal for under $100?

As an avid user of the BOR...It's on the lines of the JTM 45....Offers beefy lows..

Re: Marshall-In-A-Box pedal for under $100?

Tech 21 British is also an awesome pedal...Don't think I've seen this one mentioned?

Re: Marshall-In-A-Box pedal for under $100?

I'll look into the Lovepedal Plexi/800. From what TGWIF, seems close. And from a video, sound close too. Hmmm now I'm stuck.... Lovepedal Plexi 800 or Box of Rock. I'll like how both sound.

Re: Marshall-In-A-Box pedal for under $100?

I've heard great things about the Purple Plexi 800. I'd stay away from the Box of Rock. While it's an amazing pedal, it's got WAY less gain than you'd be expecting. It's modeled after a JTM-45.

I'd look into the Menatone King of the Britains. I got mine used for $140. Really, really nice pedal.

Re: Marshall-In-A-Box pedal for under $100?

You`re going to be putting a pedal thur the clean of a 5150lll ? Get out your credit card and get a nice pedal. I`ve tried out enough OD/Distortion pedals over the last year to find that you usually get what you pay for.

or myabe this

Re: Marshall-In-A-Box pedal for under $100?

For under $100 the Crunch Box for sure or if you can find one a John Spina modded DS-1. If you can swing it for around $150 used there's the Wampler Plextortion and Pinnacle. I wouldn't call the Pinnacle a JCM 800 in a box but it is killer hot rodded Marshall Plexi in a box for sure

Hmm.. Never thought of my Spina modded DS1 as a Jcm800 sounding pedal. maybe Im not cranking loud enough
