Re: Marshall JCM 600 head ?

I had a JCM 600 combo for a while, and it was a great amp. Nice, nice cleans, and really decent OD. It's not a metal amp, but will cover most other styles very well. The clean channel takes pedals very well also.

I purchased a JCM 800 combo shortly after I bought the 600 just because a good deal became available, but it was a hard decision to get rid of the 600. Stock it was a hell of an amp. I think I could have coaxed some even better tones out of it with some tube changes and a speaker swap...the stock speakers were just so so.

If I was looking for a Marshall, but not wanting to spend a ton of $$, I would not hesistate to pick one up. IIRC, Tom M here on the board had his 600 2x12 up for sale a month or so ago... $500. It's the same unit I had...I sold it to him.

Re: Marshall JCM 600 head ?

I'm the one with the combo for sale. It's a great amp and has served me well for three? years. It's just too much amp for me right now. I'm a bassist by trade so I don't need a giant guitar amp to play with at home.

It's got great cleans, and a very nice OD sound, as Jeff said. There's not an insane bone-crushing metal amount of gain on tap, but there's enough to bring you right to the edge of metal. Svetlana EL34's and JJ 12AX7's made the amp come a live in a spectacular way.

a guy i know on-line in Florida says his 600 is amazing... last i heard from him he was recovering it purple..

Re: Marshall JCM 600 head ?

I really enjoy my JCM 600. To answer your question, yes it does have a master volume.

It sounds great when you turn up the master volume a bit. It ''opens up'. I agree that if metal is your thing you'll need a boost, but it does clean to mid-gain quite well.

Re: Marshall JCM 600 head ?

Are there any Hot Rod mods to push it over the edge to metal?

Would a 500t equipt V get there?

Re: Marshall JCM 600 head ?

The only trick I know of is to run a short patch cord in the Parallel FX In/Out jacks and turn the Parallel FX Level knob on the front up. Other than that, throw an OD pedal in front of it for crazy high-gain. I never needed that much gain, so I didn't even use the FX loop trick.

Re: Marshall JCM 600 head ?

I love mine JCM602,(2x12 combo version) had it for about 5 yrs now, got it at a pawnshop for $200! I have tweek the tubes for my personal sound, installed V30/G12H30 speakers, had no problems with it, I do run a small fan behind it though, just to keep everything cool. I also have a 4x12 Greenback cab for larger venues, so I can run 6x12's if I want.

I don't know of any mods for the amp. Pedals will definitely get it into metal territory. If I'm in a metal mood I throw my Keeley DS-1 in front of the clean channel. The gain channel can get you to hard rock/old metal on it's own, but it can't quite cut it for the modern stuff.

I run mine through an Avatar 4x12 and I dig the sound!

The 500t in your V should work well for metal. Marshall + Gibson is a tried and true recipe for rock of all kinds....

I used to do this with my JTM60, which is more or less the same amp. It does increase the gain quite a bit. Whether it gives you as much as you want I can't say, as I don't really play metal. I used it to increase the gain on the clean channel so I could use it for AC/DC-style crunch rhythm.

Re: Marshall JCM 600 head ?

A JCM 600 head just went for $400 on Ebay. Just curious about it. Wasn't there a 50 watt JCM 800 with 2 channels too?

Yes, a 2205. You won't find one of those for $400 though, unless it's really, really beat bad.

Or a 2210 would be the 100w version.

I have a 2210 and JTM60 1x12 combo myself and really like both :)
