Marshall JMP-1: Have I been misinformed?

I've gotten the impression that the JMP-1 is kind of mediocre, yet plenty of guys like Billy Gibbons and Robin Finck seem to get great tone out of them. What gives?

Re: Marshall JMP-1: Have I been misinformed?

I 've always found them a little bland sounding for my taste, but I have heard others get great tone from them.

Re: Marshall JMP-1: Have I been misinformed?

Same here - the general consensus is that they sound pretty flat, but a lot of the UK musicians fire it up and mix it with BBEs etc etc and it sounds pretty good. Mind you, a stand alone JMP-1 does sound very flat and stale IMO

Re: Marshall JMP-1: Have I been misinformed?

I agree they sound kinda lifeless, it has the Marshall flavor to it but lacks the harmonic richness of there heads. Billy Gibbons also played JCM 900's which most people seem to not like either, ive never played one so i dont know, but it goes to show that being a great player and using the right gear can make usually sub par amps sound great.

Re: Marshall JMP-1: Have I been misinformed?

I had one for a long time, and for high gain sounds it was killer! For mid gain, and clean tones it had to be precessed somehow to sound good, but then it sounded precessed! Keep this in mind...Billy sets his JMP-1 clean and gets all his crunch from stompboxes...so he is not relying on the tone from the JMP-1.
