Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

Given your location, wouldn't this amp be a prime candidate for the "Marsha" mod?

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

Ah yeah, Friedman isn't too far away - it's about $500 for a single mod though, and while I'd probably love the HBE mod, I'm not sure I wan't to dump that much into the amp.

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

Offer him $400. If he bites, you can either take it to a tech or fix it yourself and come out way ahead on the amp.

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

dude, you're gonna record peeps for a living. this would be a keeper for life after friedman does his magic.

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

Just made an offer, we'll see what happens. I think I'm willing to spend up to about $600 on it, after that I'm not sure it's worth it to me.

Will definitely be retolexing in white and getting an HBE mode done (or modding it myself) if I do end up buying it!

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

That's a really loud and cleanish Marshall being a non master volume model, and I do like the amp for that price or even cheaper.
It's a good classic Marshall, but man is it loud before it breaks up.

I still think there's too many great sounding amps out there to dump a thousand into that amp. First, the ohms selector has to be fixed, and anything else that pops up.

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

That is a $400 head in my neck of the woods, but trust me when I tell you that spending the money with Dave is the way to go.

Dankstar has played both my Friedman heads, and they are the real deal.

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

I had a 77 like that one in the shop about a month ago for a rebuild. It was biased wicked hot and sounded wimpy. I biased it where it needed to be and it sounded awesome after the rebuild.

The one you are looking at has had the power supply rebuilt. Other than the bias cap values, I don't see anything I would consider a mod. The ohm selector is an easy fix for any tech.

By the way, the guy that owns the 77 that was in my shop paid $2000 for it. Way too much in my opinion but to him it was worth every penny.

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

$500 would be the most IMO, but if it has the sound, spend the $550. If the OT has been replaced/rewound, I would definitely want to know by whom and with what.

Do you plan to mod it or leave it stock?

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

$550 was his barebones low, but I don't think that's too bad considering the area I'm in. Definitely plan to get an HBE mod done to it, and maybe have it knocked down to 50w - just not modern enough for my tastes as-is I'm guessing!

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

Slight update... guy directed me to a thread on The Gear Page which had a post from the guy he bought it from:

"I used to own this amp.... when I bought it, it was modded for a master volume.... then brought back to "normal", recapped and a new power transformer from Nashville Amplifier Service a few years back."

So the tranny isn't original, but doesn't Friedman put in new tranny's with his mods?

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

dude i know it may not be relevant, but down here these don't go for less than 1250, in worse condition that that one (ie beat to sh1t and non-reversible mods)
if you can pick it up for around 500 i wouldn't expect you'd have too much difficulty flipping it if it didn't work out for you, without losing much if anything on it
and if it's relatively easy for you to get it modded by dave freidman, that's just another reason to hit up the ATM (people send him stuff from here)
if you of all people can't make this deal work for you, i'll be most surprised.
just my opinion.
:beerchug:

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

For $550, I'd do it. That's cheaper than a used 5150, and that Marshall will be a collectors item stock or modded.

No, not unless you pay for a new one.

Dave will tell you if the OT sounds like poo or not.

Just have a conversation with Dave about what kind of sound you want, and he will make it happen.

The kitchen sink with the Fat and Sat switches is what you want to start with.

Kitchen sink includes the C45, BE, and HBE mods, right? I really don't care to have the C45 and could easily live without the HBE; but I'm sure a conversation with him will pin down exactly what I want.

Realized the replacement was the power tranny, so the output should still be original. We'll see though!

Re: Marshall JMP Superlead MKII?

What I want to know is where are you guys finding vintage NMV Superleads for 500 bucks..I mean other than right here? Please let me know so I can buy one immidiatly! Thats a 1200.00 amp any place Ive ever seen, and Ive looked fairly hard. Thats my dream amp, and i wouldn't even mess with the Tolex- looks great to me.
Nor would I bother to mod it..it would lower the value and those Marshalls sound phenomenal as is.
The Power trannys not a huge deal..it doesn't really affect the tone like the Output transformer- *that I would want original. If its had a recap and the tubes are good, you've got nothing short of a magnificent amp plug and play , and at an absolute steal.
I'm really salivating over that Marshall ,man! Get a good Boost and your golden.

No, no it wouldn't, and no, no they don't - not for what I'm doing.

okay..I hope the mods are reversable though..at some point a mostly original one- or is going to be worth than a modified one I would think, not that its a concern to you cause it might not be .
Or you could get a great hi gain tube preamp and run it straight in since theres no master... but good luck..great amp either way.
