Marshall Jubilee

Re: Marshall Jubilee

They are two channel, or simply a JCM800 2204 MV with a built in high gain boost and a more effective tone stack, depending on how you look at it.

They only have a single input gain control for both modes/channels. This makes it difficult to set the clean mode for pure cleans and still have enough gain in the distortion mode, or to set the low gain mode with a clean but beefy tone, and not have too much gain in the distortion mode. Regardless, I like mine best with the master volume above 6, no matter what. Any MV volume setting less than 6 and the amp sounds lazy and flat.

You do have options to use higher MV setting, as the power amp can be run in either pentode (50 watts) or triode (25watts). This does make a difference on these amps, unlike other amps. It's a noticable tonal change as well as volume. In pentode it's a aggressive rocker, but in triode it's much mellower. The lead master allows you to balance the boosted mode volume against the low gain volume, but it changes constantly, depending on how much compression is happening at the front end of the amp. There's also a pull rythim clip mode that gives a light buzzy overdrive at low volumes, but I find this feature useless. It's much better to just push the EL34 power amp into a more organic overdrive.

As was stated, tubes, and the bias setting, make a huge difference, as do speakers. I really don't like this amp through G12T75's, but with V30's or G12H30's, it's one of the best Marshalls.

Re: Marshall Jubilee

So are the JVM those new Marshalls?

anyone played one?

I would like to hear a Jube with different speakers, not just 75's and V30s.

I almost bought a Jubilee half stack 3 months back and decided not to. After sitting with a friend for a while, decided it just wasn't as magical as I thought. I am more fascinated by its medium gain tones as some bluesy guys have found like the Black Crowes etc.

While ONLY a Marshall sounds like a Marshall, the Bogner Shiva gets those Jubilee tones but with a more refined Plexi character. I know 800s and Jubilees are back "in" along with 80s rock, but I think certain boutique amps do it better. I actually preferred the Marshall 6100 - the PLEXI mode KILLS and sounds amazing with pedals. I also found that a Plexi type amp with a Fulltone OCD can get you some great 80s rock tones.

People have a bad habit of picturing Appetite for Destruction when they think Jubilee, and that was NOT what Slash used.

I am starting to think the Jubilee is a very good amp that is way overhyped. I did a label audition a few months back and a friend walked in with a Jubilee head and a Les Paul. I can honestly say he wins style points, but it's NOT the end all in tone. A good 800 is close enough for me, though the Clean channel of the Jubilee is very nice.

Thats funny...those guys didn't use Jubs...they did make use of Jub cabs loaded with V30's but those med over drive tones you are talking about came from mostly tweed Fenders...sometimes tweed fenders used as heads into Jub cabs loaded wiht V30's!

Re: Marshall Jubilee

I didn't like the G12-75Ts with my 2553. I put a V30 and G12H-30 in my 2556B 2x12 cab. The difference was astounding!

Three further observations on my 2553:

1 - It is not a bassy amp. With the G12-75Ts it was noticably lacking in bass. Sounds just right with the V30/G12H-30, but my '77 JMP 2204 has loads more bass.

2 - It is not a loud amp. This is good. A 50w tube amp I can play with the volume at 7 in a pub. If I did that with my 2204 we'd be thrown out.

3 - It sounds better at bedroom volume than any other tube amp I've owned.

That's one thing everyone likes about the Jubilee. It sounds better at lower volumes than almost any other Marshall. You can get any shade of Marshall tone at club levels, unlike NMV and 800's.

I even use an Alesis Nanoverb in the FX loop, so I can lower the volume even further, using the Nanoverb output knob.

I was not considering letting my Shiva go........ She's a Keeper. But there are times when a Marshall would do the trick! OH the Gas we have! Its interesting for certain things I prefer the Gain out of my 900, but the cleans from the Shiva are nothing short of Magical!

Re: Marshall Jubilee

I read somewhere that's there's a small mod you can do to a jcm 800 (dual channel i think) that will make it sound like a jubilee, is that true?
