Marshall JVM

How does it rate tonally?? I played one and found alot of cool sounds in it. I thought the distortion seemed alittle fizzy tho. The reverb is super lush. Im leary of the digital verb tho.
Also, I couldnt get much chug on the low E. Im guessing this is just a marshall midrange issue that im not used to.??
Ive been wanting a Marshall forever and cant decide what to get. I like the idea of all the different tones this makes.

To you Marshall guys, how does it match up to the classics??

thanks

Re: Marshall JVM

Check for threads back a few weeks . This and the Vintage Modern were discussed a few times. Haven't had a chance to try either, yet.

what cab did you try it thru? Its been my exerience that some cabs have no low end, while some have way too much.... might not be the head's fault...

Re: Marshall JVM

I am also interested to see how this amp compares to the TSL model. I wonder if it is just the same thing as a TSL with a few more modes and an extra channel... I saw a few really insanely good reviews on it, especially an almost "too-good-to-be-true" review out of a magazine that gave it like 5 stars across the whole board. I was never crazy for the TSL, I really want to try out the JVM

I used the marshall cab that goes with it..
Jeffrec,
I did a search and didnt find anything...

Re: Marshall JVM

I liked all the channels on the amp the first one. From the top left was my favorite. Followed by the top right. I dimed all the knobs (cept for master volume) and used the tone knob on my guitar to melt the ice. That thing cranks some serious sound.

Re: Marshall JVM

I wasn't impressed with the JVM or Vintage Modern; I thought both of the new amps sounded like a JCM 900 with slightly better clarity and more bottom. Regarding which Marshall I'd recommend, I'd have to know what you play and how deep your pockets are. One of the best Marshalls ever made is a JCM 800 2203, but it isn't very versatile or very forgiving. If you'd like some suggestions, please post or message me with what style you play, what your main guitar is, and what gauge strings you play. A 2203 sounds great with a JB and 11s while it can sound a bit weak with a 59 and 9s (at less than window shaking volume). Whether or not you need channel switching is another thing to consider. I used to love multi-channel amps, (and rack systems) but I find myself thinking 'less is more' as of late.

Sorry. It was a few weeks back. I don't rember the title, though.

I agree with Lex666, the cab is important. Fortuntely you used the Marshall cab.

A month or so ago, I tried the new Vox all tube head with el34's, but the shop had it attached to a real crappy cab instead of the Vox cab. Sounded like poop on a stick

Are marshall cabs better than others?? I know its going to be a matter of opinion.. I currently use a Peavey Ultra plus head, but use a Carvin 4x12 cab.

My main thing with the JVM is how closely does it mimic the JCM 800 and Jubilees?

The speakers make the cab, so check out which ones you like (Celestion vs Eminence, etc), also re-audition the JVM and see how closely it sounds like a JCM800, etc. Your ears are the key. Since I've never tried a JVM, I can't give an opinion.

Its been over 20 years since I played a JCM800, so I can only remember that I loved the tone. Plus, I cut my teeth during the hairmetal 80s and all my favs used them. So, thats why Im asking for help.. I cant compare, but want to know if the JVM is able to get that sound.. I found alot of great tones in it

Blood,

According to a review on the Marshall website, the JVM is supposed to have great cleans and can do from Plexi to JCM800 real well. I'll have to check one out at CG soon.

Good luck,

Jeff

Re: Marshall JVM

A lot of guys in the 80's favored the Celestion 75W speakers. This speakers is tight compared to a G12H30 which I find to have a nice loose feel to it. It would be worth your efferts to play through a variety of cabs though. I personally like the 1960AX which is loaded with greenbacks, but I'm more of a blues guy so I guess it depends on what you plan on doing!

Right! I have a guitar one (I think) that gave it a platinum award and says it covers all those very well.. I dont always find magazine reviews to be un biased. So, I was hoping to hear from my forum bros who know marshalls.

Either way, there is alot of good stuff in that amp.

guitar mags seem to praise something if it is good and look the other way if it is terrible. i've never read a bad review and everyone (including the mag. editors) seems to fall head over heels for anything marshall comes out with. these are two reasons that you shouldnt take the review seriously. go spend an hour or two playing it through different cabs (dont forget to bring YOUR GUITAR) and decide if you like it.

Yeah, thats the thing.. Ive never seen a guitar mag give marshall a bad review. so, Im skeptical. Example, this new MG 10 sounds like the voice of heaven! Marshall have really outdone themselves with this little box..

Im just saying.. I read the reviews and try to get opinions of others too.
Im not sure if GC will let me swap cabs, but I will try taking my axe up there.
They make it a pain to do that, but oh well.

Thanks all! And again, if anyone tries it, let me know what you think.

Re: Marshall JVM

remember that guitar center dudes work on commission. if some guys sells you 2 $2000 head, the least he could do is work for his $ by helping you switch cabs.

BloodRose,

The JVM doesn't sound anything like a decent 800 or Jubilee, and I'd know because I have both of them in the next room. (You've heard my brother's and my Marshalls as well) When you go to GC be sure to play a 2203X (JCM800 reissue) as well as the JVM and you'll see how close they're not. The reissue 800s aren't great, but they're decent; which should at least hint at what a really good 800 or JMP can do.

For speakers it's hard to go wrong with Vintage 30s, but I can't really recommend Marshall cabinets as their build quality has been very poor since the early 90s. They use a lot of MDF instead of birch ply, and their wiring is much lighter gauge than it should be. I have an early 70s Marshall box that sounds like god, but it's made of real 11-ply birch and wired with 16-gauge wire into original G12Hs. If you have a Carvin Legacy cab with V30s, it's probably better than a current Marshall box. The only things better than a Carvin Legacy would be a Mojo, Bogner, or Ear Candy cabinet.

Well, my cabinet is a Carvin 4x12 for the MTS series, not a Legacy.. I used to have an MTS amp. The cab is solid construction, but has Carvins British series speakers. So, the Legacy cabs are good huh?
The JCM 800 reissues arent the same as the older ones?? Should be for what they charge..
