Strating with all contrls at 12 noon, and running greenbacks through 2x4x12 cabs, how do I get a good sound out of a JCM 800?What settings on the control knobs?>
Waht about setting for using a Tube screamer with a JCM800?

Ths place is pretty barren tonight. I aint gonna lie, I had a 12 pack and a whole bottle of wine. I don't usually drink this much( and post) too much no more. But while I'm at it, might as well make hay while the sun shines.

Can't speak for Greenbacks in a 4x12 as I don't have them. I've got a 2x12 with Carvin Celestion copies. How close they are to the real thing I can't say.

As for the 800, I keep mine set for 12 o'clock on the EQ and Presence, and tweak as needed for whatever I'm playing along with. Maybe more presence for vintage Priest, maybe less highs for vintage Maiden, maybe just drop the presence for vintage Sabbath.

Also can't comment on the TS. The TS model in my Line 6 M13 sounds odd to me - it has a distorted and a clean tone running at once. I'll have the house to myself later today, I'll see if I can record it, since everyone I ask about it says "WTF?"

But if you've got a Fuzz PI pedal, cut the Mid control almost to 0 and crank up Ride The Lightning.

Everything on 10 on the amp. Take bass or presence off a bit as needed.

Little gain, lots of level on the TS.

Every rig, room, person is different. Use your ears.

I am assuming by greenbacks you mean g12m? They were just as many h30 greenbacks too. If it is G12ms...they ike to be worked, but its a fine line where they are working hard and they are pushed too much and overcompress, and flub out. Easy on the bass, and preamp gain.

JCM 800 P4, B9, M6, T3, V?, G7

Tube Screamer or basically any OD... G 9:00 - 11:00, Tone 10:30, V wherever it sounds right.

That's where I set them.

Depends on the room, I guess. I remember playing a JCM clone in a small room. The settings I really liked were

Presence 5
Bass 4
Mids 8
Treble 4.5
Gain 6


Tubescreamer
Gain 10 o clock
Tone match to amp
Level max

Bass 5
Middle 5
Treble 5
Presence start at 0 and adjust to suit the space.
Gain @ 9 o'clock
Volume 5-6
That'll give you a starting crunch and then go nuts.

Crank that EQ up for more beef!

Bass- 85%
Mids-100%
Treble- 75%
Presence- 60%


But go easy on these settings...

Gain- 30-60%

Volume- <60%

You didn't mention which tubes are in the power section, and that definitely makes a difference with a 2203/2204. I don't currently own a JCM800, but when I'm playing one I set it up pretty similarly (to GJ) at least when using EL-34s. If yours has 6550s instead, you'll want less bass and a bit more treble.

I need to take a picture of my current Marshall collection, all stacked up nicely. I know it's right up your alley.

Being in LA, I search for 100% mint condition vintage Marshalls daily. I don't always buy, but I'm always looking. Here's what it is.

Jubilee 2550 50W w/JJ E-34L's and Tungsol pre's
Jubilee slant cab w/H30 top V30 bottom
Jubilee straight cab w G12T-75 (I actually use it mostly with my Orange Tiny Terror)
'86 JCM800 2204 w/Ruby EL-34, Ruby highgain pre's
'84 JCM800 4103 212 combo w/4 Tungsol 6550's and pre's
Marshall 1960AHW salt/pepper cab (V30 top and G12T-75 bottom)

All in 100% dead mint condition. People can't believe it when they see them, because they look like I pulled them out of their cartons in the 80's! :cool2: The OD pedals I use with them are the Way Huge Green Rhino,
Tube Screamer Handwired, MXR Classic OD, Barber LTD silver, and sometimes the gold Klon.

I'll take pics soon, I promise.

Sometimes I wish I had room for a collection like that. These days the only Marshall gear I own are a MG combo I use for recording overdubs, the 2555 head, and a 1977/78 1982B cabinet loaded with original blackback H30s. You can have the Jubilee when you pry it from my cold, dead hands, but I'm thinking about letting the cab go. It's in pretty used condition, I don't have room for it, and it's just too damn big and heavy to be practical.

For gigging I'm probably going to stick with my H&K Edition Tube 20 combo. It sounds like a JCM800 on steroids, only weights about 40-45lbs, and is FAR easier to replace if anyone steals it.

You can tell how loud people play their Marshalls by their Bass setting. ;)

You're killing me dude with all those sweet Marshalls... killing me.
You really gotta do a expose' on that JCM 800 head you recently acquired. I'ma start calling you 'Mr. Klon'. Those Original Klons will hit the 5K mark in 10-15 years IMO.

Thanks everybody for the excellent information. Now I have some reference just in case I actually ever do play my Marshall which is actually is a '78 JMP ( basically about the same as a JCM800) fully recapped with el 34's and ready to roar through a angled top original vintage G12-65 vintage cabinet, and a Bottom straight 90's Greenback g12m-25 .
IN point of actual fact, if I could score a vintageset of Mulards for my JMP, it would improve the tone by 75%, and why not, for 500 bucks?

I've got some old Mullard and Siemens EL-34's and don't think they're any better than all the current brands.

I think where you really hear the improvements is in guitar, speakers, and OD pedals. Any good sounding tube Marshall is more or less a blank canvas.

i'm not entirely certain who you are, or why you are trying to trade off the great 'Gearjonser's name, but let me say one thing.
If you think a 500 dollar set of vintage Mullards is no better than a cheap current set of tubes, then you are not only badly mistaken, but you are also an fool.
