Re: marshall mg 4x12 speaker upgrade

Do you really need a half-stack? As Fuse said, four new speakers is $580, plus whatever you can sell your MG for plus a little bit saved up over time...I think you could get yourself a really killer tube combo. It'll sound better than your current setup and it'll still get damn loud. Check out the used market on Ebay, especially used Marshall combos, Laney combos and maybe something from Peavey.

Then add a few quid for a couple of cans of purple spraypaint and you're sorted. :fing2:

Re: marshall mg 4x12 speaker upgrade

Re: marshall mg 4x12 speaker upgrade

How about a combo with an extension cab? You can get some real tasty sounds from a great tube amp and an extra two twelve-inch speakers tacked on.

Re: marshall mg 4x12 speaker upgrade

well part of it is cosmetic..i love the look of the stack, plus,i am 6ft 4 and 240 pounds..i would not look right rocking out in front of a combo.lol...gimme the refridgerator amp anyday

Re: marshall mg 4x12 speaker upgrade

Personally I'd sell the MG half-stack. But I've never liked MGs.

A used Peavey Classic 30/50, Traynor YCV40 or YCV50 and new Bugeras are all under a grand, so there are options.

I got my YCV40 for $400 CDN used, and while it sounds monstrous through a 4x12, it still gets VERY loud with a single efficient 12" speaker. Traynor tube amps are made in North America and the quality and durability of them really shows.

Re: marshall mg 4x12 speaker upgrade

my cabinet dooesnt say marshall right now..lol the cab logo snapped in half when it caught on my shirt.

Good enough for Lemmy. Good enough for the rest of us. :biglaugh:

Mr. K famously once "redesigned" the logos on some of his Marshall heads with a craft knife. The best-known one appears in many photographs as "Marsha". The other probably appears to read something like "arse".

Re: marshall mg 4x12 speaker upgrade

Look for a used Peavey 412MS cab, usually $150-250.

An MDF cab is only part of the issue, MDF is used i a lot of high end audio cabs to good effect but I don't always like in for a guitar cab. The MG cabs are smallish, generally aren't packed very well and are loaded with a low-end MIC Celestion. You could try some acoustic insulation but that $60 would be better served towards a new cab.

Re: marshall mg 4x12 speaker upgrade

Dude, you can get used used Carvins for ~$300/Head.

As for SS/VS, look into old Marshall 8100's (VS) and USA Randall RG's (RG100ES, RG80ES, etc).
Check ebay.
They go for cheap and sound great. (Dimebag and George Lynch used 'em).

Also look at Bugera. All the reliablility issues have apparently been fixed. $450 for a brand new head.

Re: marshall mg 4x12 speaker upgrade

yea astrozombie there was a huge thread dumping on bugera amps here a couple of days ago, mostly concerning trademark and copyright infringement and quality issues.

Re: marshall mg 4x12 speaker upgrade

i asked about randal rx 120 heads and no body seemed to know alot about them, randall has a half stack right now for 500 bucks..120 watts solid state.

Re: marshall mg 4x12 speaker upgrade

have you seen the very recent bugera thread?it wasnt very nice.

While I'd recommend a tube Traynor over anything else in its price range as I think it's the best bang for your buck, I also own a Bugera V5 which I'm quite happy with and it hasn't given me any issues.

Re: marshall mg 4x12 speaker upgrade

oh like i said in the thread,i have never even seen one of these amps,so all i can say is they are in a price range that would make me look at them, that thread also made me think no way would i get one of these.
