Marshall MG100FDX????

Re: Marshall MG100FDX????

Try before you buy this one.

Many people do not like them..

It works for me and my custom cabinet but you never know what other gear they are using it with in the musicians friend sound clips...(they could use like a $1500 guitar and put the output to a tube amp to make the online sample make it sound more appealing, I'm not saying they do but you just dont know, also unknown is the amount of editing they do to the recordings)

that said, I have it and like everything about it (except for the lower gain distortion)

Before getting one, I'd cruise down to the local GC and try one out... I really dig Marshall stuff, but the MG series was a real turn off for me. It was more fizz instead of distortion. The effect were just "blah".

I highly recommend trying it out first.

If you're looking for a SS amp, try the Vox's. They sound more natural and include modeling and better sounding effects.

Re: Marshall MG100FDX????

make sure you really know your volume needs and your ability to transport one around ... unless you have some need to be bone crushingly deafening, the 4x12" might not be your best option, especially if you need to be able to tote it around to jam with friends ... you can get a really good used amp (tubes or ss) for the $700+ you will spend on that from MF (once you include shipping)

and if you think you need to be bone crushingly deafening, please use hearing protection

those things are pieces of crap. look elsewhere for good solid state amps.

+1

Thats good advice. The 4x12 will be a monster to move around and probably way too large and loud for most living rooms, basements, garages, clubs, etc.

Try going with a good 2x12 combo or cab. That way you can add additional cabs later if you want to expand your sound. They'll be a heckuva lot easier to move around too.

Re: Marshall MG100FDX????

I'm also with the piece of crap sentiment. Marshall puts their name on some utter junk these days, as well as making some good stuff. This is in the junk department. Agree also with the volume needs. Too many go off and get a junk 100W half stack, and are unhappy. Hang in there bud.

Re: Marshall MG100FDX????

what are you going to use it for? if you have a pod or a couple decent pedals i think they're great for just acheiving good volume. i ran mine through a marshall 2x12 and a couple pedals and i didnt mind it. but compared to my boogie its nowhere near as good sounding...my favorite thing about the amp was channel ones crunch. sounded great for low to moderate gain stuff. i also always put just a touch of chorus on the effects and then used the effect level to bump up the volume, essentially giving me a lead boost for either channel one or two. it thickend up the sound some with the chorus. but i think this amp shines on the clean channels crunch option honestly (meaning, i thought it sounded the most "marshall-y". spend some time eq'ing it and messing with and you can get good things from it. dont just sit there for 10 minutes at GC and write it off. if you like it, PM me and maybe we could work out a price...

Re: Marshall MG100FDX????

Used you can get it unbearably cheap. The other guitarist in my band uses the halfstack and he makes it sound pretty good. But I agree that you should always save up for the tube amp. The feel is just so inspiring when you play tubes.

With things like Blues Jr, Pro Jr. and the Tiny Terror around, even used Classic 30's and 50's go for really cheap. For almost any situation you could buy a solid state you could easily get one of these and an OD/Distortion box really easily.

Maybe I'm just a tube snob but besides some select solid states, nothing compares to tubes in feel.
