marshall petition 2

Re: marshall petition 2

Just curious, do you get some of the other European brands of amps for less? ENGL?

(Sorry for the hijack :D )

I'm told Engl sell for high, almost boutique prices everywhere except Germany. I know they do in the states. Down here in New Zealand, they sell for similar prices to Mesa.

This is a pretty neat trick Engls seem to be pulling off, considering Engl's build quality is similar to (non handwired) Marshall, Peavey, Crate V series and lower level Fender gear rather than Mesa, Rivera or anything boutique.

H&K are slightly more expensive again down here. Diezel are very expensive and on a custom order basis only. I'm pretty sure it's the same in the US.

I just saw a Framus amp yesterday too. Up there with Mesa prices.

OK,

5F6A (tweed) Bassman vs JTM 45:

-12ax7 in the JTM's first gain stage vs 12ay7 in the bassman.
-different positioning, values and type of filter caps on both amps.
-mustard coupling caps in the marshall vs astron coupling caps in the fender.

-so pretty subtle stuff, apart from more gain out of the pre from the 12ax7.

I've heard JTM 45s through open 4x10s and they get very bassman-esque.

the main differences between plexi and jtm are the introduction of the high treble channel with the .68uf cap, done by biasing each triode of the 1st gain stage individually.

From there, the most significant change is from 5881s to EL34s and the introduction of solid state rectification.

Now you could say that the plexi marshall is just a hop, skip and a jump away from a tweed bassman, and on paper you'd have an argument. But discounting the revolutionary closed back celestion ceramic speaker quad you're still faced with two very different sounding amps.

Re: marshall petition 2

well that was my point, on paper they're not that far away at all

to anyone who says otherwise, make a 5f6a head, load it with 12ax7's and the necessary adjustments for el34's, change it to a solid state rectifier, and a/b it with a plexi through the same cab. Pretty much the same

so, my request for a hot rod deville with celestions, el34's, and an extra 12ax7 would seem like night and day vs the original, but in reality it'd still be a fender ripoff & would most likely be awesome

so there
