I'm in the group that thinks Bogner is a little overrated. Actually I'm making room for a new Splawn head. I have played both Bogners and Splawns and I lean towards Splawn amps.

Re: Marshall Plexi vs JCM800

Well I think Plexi and 800 are differen amps, not very different, I would say from what I've heard - I never played a plexi and only played an RI of 800, 800 was build toward a certain direction music was heading and Plexi while still build toward a certain direction of the music at the time was more of a musicians instrument, more musical ... I think Bogner is overpriced, not over rated. But it does a marshall thing at higher quality level than marshall by itself. Splawn is more of a hot-rodded marshall, kind of like Lee Jackson marshalls back in the day, or Lynch moded or EVH moded marshalls, only really compressed in addition.

Re: Marshall Plexi vs JCM800

Seeing as I have a 1984 800 and a 1969 Plexi at the house I am not going to choose.

They really are different sounding amps. Both amps are extremely loud.

I'll never let go of my 2203 and now that it has been converted to EL34s and has had a solid loop installed it really is a top notch El34 platform. That being said, after my Supro gets new pots and caps and I have a 30 watt Class A EL84 head made I may still have a Plexi clone built.

If for no other reason, nothing else sounds like a Plexi.

It's funny, Rid and I seem to be on the same line on the same page lately...

Plexi by a mile...800's have never blown me away...

Bogner...Splawn...yawn...just not that impressed...

Re: Marshall Plexi vs JCM800

I may be the odd man out here...don't get me wrong, the old Plexi Marshalls sound wonderful with the right guitar pushing them. I think yhat the blood pooling in my ears at the volume the sound level that they "wake up" at may be jading my opinion. "Some" 800's really get it for me. The ones with reverb do not. Marshall had several incarnations of the non-reverb 800; two different power supply voltages and some had a moderate gain increase over others in the preamp that IMO cut the bandwidth to much (they were thinner and somewhat nasally). Of course there was the Unicord decision to go with 6550 output tubes. Gimme a lower plate voltage (~380 volt), lower gain, EL34 equipped 800 and I'll be quiye happy.

Re: Marshall Plexi vs JCM800

I dont care for 800's. Too buzzy and sort of Harsh.

I say Plexi but, I will take my 900 over either.

Re: Marshall Plexi vs JCM800

Never played a Plexi, but comparing a NMV JMP to a 2203, they are different beasts. Both need to be way too loud to give up the goods, and even though the MV allows you to turn up the gain, it tends to get buzzy. It sounds better with the gain lower and the volume higher. Either one needs a pedal to get into higher gain territory, so that's a wash. Probably a Plexi, but man is it really unusable for me at the good volumes.

I think I do prefer a Splawn or Bogner for more realistic stuff. But man, crank it possibly with a little boost and it's like God himself is smiling down. :)

Re: Marshall Plexi vs JCM800

Plexi by a mile and then some. Personally, I can't stand JCM800's.

Cheers........................................ wahwah

Re: Marshall Plexi vs JCM800

I sold my Bogner.

I still have my Splawn.

That said, if forced to choose between the amps listed, I'd go Plexi. I think the Plexi has a more musical fundamental tone, thicker midrange, and if I need more gain than it can provide I can always hit it in the face with an OD pedal.

Re: Marshall Plexi vs JCM800

Neither

Metal face 1987 :naughty:

That said if I had to choose, I'd probably go with the 800 over a plexi- but it really depends on which plexi and which 800.

and more important than that- which speakers.

Hmmm... you seem like the right guy to ask. If you could, who would you describe the main tonal differences between the two of them?
