marshall question

hey guys. For the people who have played the dsl series, do you prefer the dsl50 or the dsl100 and why? I want to know if there is any difference between the dsl100 and the dsl50 other than wattage. I told my parents that 100 watts is more than what i need, but they said ill probably need the 100 watts later and its only $100 more. I remember from a while back some of you prefered the dsl50 over the dsl100. why?

thanks brothas.

Re: marshall question

Never played one sorry, but I guess one advantage of lower wattage is being able to push the volume up higher, because tube amps sound better cranked up.

Re: marshall question

I Loved and almost bought the DSL 50...It has plenty of power...Basically the 100 watter would give you cleaner overall headroom, but the preamps are identical...I would go 50 watts if I were to buy that amp today,in fact I play through an early 70's Marshall 50 watt head and it's plenty powerful....It's cheaper when you replace tubes in the 50 watter down the road also...

Re: marshall question

running a 50 watt would let you push the power amp harder to get a better tone. There is no NEED for a 100 watt amp, unless you are playing a huge pavilion or something like that 100 watts is pure over kill.

Agreed....A 50 watt Marshall isn't lacking at all in volume! :)

Re: marshall question

The measurable difference between 100W and 50W is 3dB, Watts aren't really hearible differences they tell you more about tone.

Get the DSL50 if you want easier break up and deeper tone, get a DSL100 if you want headroom and are planning to play at huge venues.

I've played the DSL50, but I didn't really care for it. It was very bright, had too little dynamics for my taste and wasn't that responsive. You should keep two things in mind before listening to me though:

1)The only Marshalls I like are the Plexi's and JCM800s
2) A guy once listened to me and told me I'm not really a Marshall guy, he might be right, because I don't like british sounds at all, I like chunky modern sounds since I mostly play Progressive Rock

Re: marshall question

The DSL 100/50s are cool amps. The clean tone is very clean and the overdrive is very good for "modern" stuff and classic rock.
I think you can get plenty of headroom from the 50 watter and that would be my choice.. unless you need to play very clean at very loud volumes.

Re: marshall question

I have the DSL 50 and Love it to Bits, Fantastic amp IMO.Also IMO you can go From Plexi to Jcm 800 (with the added benefit of a very clean clean channel, which i'd describe as almost fender like) And more, and Theres Plentymore Extra Gain on tap (Not Mesa Rectifier type extra gain but still quiet a heavy amount)..If you were playing anywhere that you needed to turn the DSL 50 up as loud as it go's just to be heard you would no doubt'dly be mic'd up as this thing is Mucho Loud indeed, and with the 50 watts you would easily drown out a very very loud drummer on full volume anyways...
Ive heard that some have found the 100watter a bit fuller sounding as it has the extra 50 watts driving it butto me this thing sound very full and dynamic as is

Thats as they say my .02cents

good luck

Re: marshall question

Just wondering are the channel on the dls 50 and 100 independant? From the way it looks there is only 2 modes on one channel?

Re: marshall question

The one reason I'd choose a 100W amp over a 50W amp would be for better cleans. IMO, the cleans on the DSL are nothing to write home about (regardless of wattage) so I'd suggest the 50. IMO, nobody who has a 50W Marshall "needs" a 100W Marshall. A 50W tube amp is plenty loud and more than that is just asking for hearing damage.
