Marshall Silver Jubilee or a Soldano SLO

If you could have your pick of either a Marshall Silver Jubilee 100w Head or a Soldano SLO which would you choose and why?

Marshall. It's a classic. the SLO is a classic in it's own right... but it only does 1 sound. It does it really really quite well, but still.

Re: Marshall Silver Jubilee or a Soldano SLO

I'm sorry but I don't know why you would even have to ask. There's nothing you can get in a Marshall that you can't get from a Plexi or JCM 800 (pretty much) but an SLO pretty much rules the amp world doesn't it? I have played a Silver Jubilee and an SLO too. I was completely blown away by the SLO crunch channel. I hear all the great things about the lead channel but the crunch channel just killed.

They had a Silver Jubilee at Guitar Center a while back. The salesman was pretty excited about it but all I saw was an old Marshall. I didn't crank it so maybe that's where the magic happens, but I did get the volume up enough to get some heat in the tubes. I played a 6100 too but didn't walk away from the Silver Jubilee thinking anything more of it.

All I can say about it is what I hear when I play them. Nothing strikes me like an SLO crunch channel, but if I compared the lead channel on my Engl Steve Morse to the SLO lead channel, I would choose my Engl. I think the lead channel of the Engl Steve Morse is the best lead channel of any amp I have ever played.

They got a Diezel Herbert in GC a couple of weeks ago and I've been going down there to jam it out. Still even that lead channel can't touch my Engl. All my own opinion of course.

I think it would be cool to own a Silver Jubilee if you're a collector, but if you want to own one of the ultimate amps of all time to play the crap out of it the SLO is the way to go. My humble opinion that's all.

All I can say is if you're facing a decision like this then you're doing very well.

Re: Marshall Silver Jubilee or a Soldano SLO

I'm probably biased, since I bought a 1987 2555 when I was 17 and they'd just come out, then played it for several years, and I just assumed I'd have the best tone of the night, which was more often than not.

Sold it in 93 like an idiot.

Bought a 50W 2550 in 2001, and won't sell this entire fullstack if I can help it.

Then, I recall every time I've plugged into a Soldano and could think of things wrong with the tone. Usually bright and crispy, so you back it down, then it loses a bit of top end complexity...all sorts of things that kep me from ever buying one. I don't dislike the SLO, but think it's grossly overpriced. If Soldano was in the exact same price range of Marshall, I think they'd be fine. But they don't sound like they're worth Bogner or Diezel prices....and not Jubilee prices either.

I'm no Soldano hater, but if you handed me a mint condition Jubilee 2555, and a Soldano SLO......I wouldn't automatically choose either. I'd plug them both up and make a real decision. I'm betting on the Jubilee, but who knows....the real issue is that highgain EL-34 tone is more pleasing to me than 6L6 highgain.

far out...Soldano for blistering 80s lead sounds....marshall for more classic 70s/80s sounds

Actually, it does a bit more. Eric Clapton used one just for its fabulous clean tones.

Re: Marshall Silver Jubilee or a Soldano SLO

SLO, Van Halen used it on for unlawful carnal knowledge and that album has one of the greatest guitar tones ever.

Silver Jubilee.

Back in time when we recorded our 1st album I was really poor so I had two battered amps (beyond imagination), some spare munny and a plan of recording them songs. The studio was very well equipped, they had some Mesas, different Marshalls and a SLO. We did a test drive on everything that they had. Tastes differ, but nothing sounded like the 2550. There is something in it that feels just right for me. As far as I can remember, after a couple of notes or so I moved on the next amp when testing the SLO. I had no opportunity to A/B them later, but a couple of years later a fellow who fixed my old Laney PA head had a SLO for sale. Again the sound had nothing to do with me - not if I had the money :)

I've been waiting for a 2550 since that but I'm fighting with decent terms: there is not a decent one around, I have no decent money or the ones available have no decent price.

I have never played through a Soldano SLO so I can't really make a proper judgment, but the Jubilee is a great amp!

Re: Marshall Silver Jubilee or a Soldano SLO

Play both and decide for yourself. Your taste and setup is different from everyone else here so you are the only one that can really decide. I also doubt certain responses in this thread are really backed by actual experience.

I have never played either amp.

Re: Marshall Silver Jubilee or a Soldano SLO

I agree that you need to play both and if you can A/B them side by side then all the better. Either way you'll end up with a great amp but you must decide for yourself as it's a major outlay of cash. Good luck!

Re: Marshall Silver Jubilee or a Soldano SLO

SLO
The amp is much more versatile than most seem to think. Gary Moore and EC did some GREAT sounding stuff with the clean channel (GM boosted it with a TS of some description). Also, the build quality of the SLO is beyond compare.... damn thing WILL NOT break. Very consistent through 100's of hours of use (pristine clean studios and smokey, nasty clubs. Always great).
