Marshall Studio 15 is here!

Re: Marshall Studio 15 is here!

Kicks floor sheepishly... I was running it at 32 ohms. I wired it up like Micheal told me to and used the speakers he sold me with the cab. He apparently had a brain fart and I assumed that he knew what he was talking about. I never checked it with the meter because I followed his directions perfectly. I realized what was wrong when I wired up my nephew's cabinet and used the meter to check the wiring config. It all became clear then. Sorry to have worried you earlier. I'm just new at the whole speaker wiring thing and thought Micheal would know his stuff. Learned a big lesson there. Even the guys that do stuff for a living sometimes make mistakes and I shouldn't blindly follow their advice if I have a way to independantly check things out for myself.

Don't bother with the cloth covered wire for speakers. That's a waste, IMO. Just grab an old extension cord, cut some wire off that and wire it up. As long as it's non-shielded and the right thickness, it doesn't matter.

That's an interesting way to describe one's chops. But if you say so. :laugh2:

I already have cloth covered wire in the cab. I just need one more peice so it matches aesthetically.

Re: Marshall Studio 15 is here!

If you had the amp set to 16 and the cab was 32, it's not a big issue to the amp. Your ears might not be as happy with the mismatch, but the amp could care a less. The trannies can handle that. Having a 32 ohm cab and having the amp set to 4 or 8 might start to have issues.

Yep. Learned that the hard way. Rewiring the cab should brighten the amp up a touch dontchyathink? :laugh2: :smack: :smack: :smack: I wasn't worried about the Edana cause I know that she can take it. I just feel really stupid for not checking the cab's ohmage. Such a simple thing and something that I should have noticed when I changed cabs. I just didn't pick up on it because I was so certain that I did things right that I didn't check behind myself. On the bright side, this cab being re-wired to 8 ohms will let me share speakers with the studio 15 now. It is a fortunate and happy accident in some ways I guess.

Re: Marshall Studio 15 is here!

I have always had a yen for this amp, but not being able to hear it in the flesh has stopped me from getting one. This is the amp that has an attenuator built in , does it not? People I know and trust on sound say that it does not sound like you would expect a Marshall to; wonder if that is from the 6V6 tubes. I am interested in the new Princeton Recording amp for the same reason and I want to try the new attenuator design and if the built in pedals sound good with the amp???

Do you live near the mid atlantic coast of the USA? I'll let you get some quality time in on one if you want.

Re: Marshall Studio 15 is here!

After spending a bit more time with this amp. I have a better feel for it's strengths and weaknesses. One thing that is both is that it has the Silvertone 1482 swirly throaty sound when used with darker neck pickups. It doesn't quite go all womantone on you at the bottom of the neck like a JCM 800 or 900 will. Full G or E chords give off an almost vibrato effect with the swirly sounds it gives off. The Silvertone also does this and I think it's just a characteristic of the 6V6 tubes. It's both good and bad because it's not a typical marshall sound, but it does sound pretty darned cool. This beasty isn't a JCM-800 in a box though it can almost seem that way with a hot bridge humbucker. It can be many things sho nuff.

I've yet to try the DOD Bi-fet with it while using the strat. That's something I'm very curious about as it might just give the amp the juice it needs to get more gain on the front end, which is something it really needs on low output pickups. The barely breaking up sounds are nice, but I also like to make it scream and that's tough to do with lower output pups. EMG's make it scream quite nicely though and don't need a kick at all. Adding the Bi-fet with the EMG's just increases their noise and it makes the distortion get weird when boosted too much. It's really at it's limit with the EMG's and frankly I don't need any more gain than that out of this amp as it's positively on fire when I run the EMG's through it. The difference in tone is pretty stark when you remove the EMG equipped Edwards and plug in an ordinary strat. The strat just can't get the input humming like the EMG's do. At max gain the strat pups are barely past the point of breaking up. Light distortion at best.

I really wish the strat wasn't at my buds place so I could run the DOD pedal through it right now. I think it will really liven the amp up a lot and give it the kick it's craving. I think that could produce some really nice sounds, but I can't find out just yet because my bud has to be home for me to get the guitar.
