i love the JTM 45 marshall sound from AC/DC songs
but i can't really pay $1000's of dollars for marshall head and cab yet

is it possible to emulate marshall for alot cheaper lol

Re: Marshall Tone Cheap?

+1 on the Sovtek. The Orange is sort of there, but the Migs are closer I would say.

Re: Marshall Tone Cheap?

I'm going to say Traynr 50Blue. It has its own character, but when you crank it there's a lot of JTM sounds in there.

Re: Marshall Tone Cheap?

You now, speaking of pedal pushing, I actually found that when you drive a Fulltone OCD into most amps you get a very similar tone. I playing a Fender Hot Rod with an OCD in front it at GuitarCenter one time and BAM, instant AC/DC tone. Haven't tried the HAO, but I always hear good things.

Re: Marshall Tone Cheap?

If you're looking for pedals, the Plexitone is hard to beat. Course the amp it goes in to still needs to sound good!!

Re: Marshall Tone Cheap?

Get a decent tube combo and a Zvez box of Rock.
the box of rock is the best JTM45-in-a-box that i've heard, really nails the early ACDC tone.

Re: Marshall Tone Cheap?

modded traynor yba-1

with mods, a retube, and maintenance should run you about $500

can't beat that

no siree

What amp do you have now? Do you want a marshall sound to originate from the amp's overdrive, or would pedals be OK?

I am not a marshall expert at all, but I concur with Erikm5150 that a zvex box of rock sounds very "AC/DC" to me. It is not a cheap pedal, but it is probably cheaper than a new amp.

I had gotten a lot of compliments on my tone when I had my Crate vintage tube 50wt (the old blonde series that came out in the 90's). Many of those compliments came from people that thought I was playing through a Marshall.

Those Vintage series Crates are great amps, they have a tendency to have a lot of little problems but they're usually easy, cheap fixes.

If you ever come across one give it a whirl...especially the 50watt x 15in speaker combo, that one is a monster.

Re: Marshall Tone Cheap?

If you try one of the Marshall Gov'2 pedals it may allow you to get by and save until you get what you want.

Re: Marshall Tone Cheap?

thanks everyone for the suggestions
the pedal route seems best for me since it's cheap
that HAO Rust Driver sounds like a good pedal
and my amp is a crate gfx 65 solid state

Re: Marshall Tone Cheap?

Actually Mercury Magnets are working on an upgrade for the Orange tiny terror to get it closer to a plexi sound/jcm 800...so i hear :P

Yeah... that isn't going to sound like a Marshall no matter what pedal you put infront of it.

Re: Marshall Tone Cheap?

Wasn't the Orange Tiny Terror designed to do that AC/DC crunch? At least Guitarist magazine's rewiev says so.
