Marshall Valvestate 100 heads

I've had one for years and dug it out of the attic to clean up for no reason. I don't have a cab so it's just to look at right now.

How much are these things going for? Probably not much at all, as I scored mine for like $70 plus a little shipping off Ebay a few years back.

Not really that "Marshall tone" either, but great for black metal.

Yeah, I used to have an 8100 and was great for black metal and Ministry type tones. They typically go for between $80-$300. I'm kind of craving that type of tone again just to mess around with, but I might look for a Randall RH150 or similar for cheap.

why buy an entire amp for that "sounds so bad it's almost sort of good" tone?

i use Boss distortion pedals for that.

Because I'm an amp whore and enjoy the challenge of making any amp sound good. I also love Ministry and like to sometimes play that tight buzzsaw industrial metal tone. Also, Randall's kick ass and $200 for one is no big deal to me.

I got my MG 100 head for 150 free shipping not long ago...I only see the valvestate 2000's (avt's) on the bay right now but from what I remember the non-tube preamp valvestates (which is what you are talking about right?) went for about the same but just a few more $$. From what I gather those who've played both usually preffer the valvestates over the MG's..

IIRC, Marshall released an early version of hybrid amps called "Valvestate". shortly thereafter the line was re-vamped and later called "Advanced Valvestate Technology" aka "AVT". I do believe the all these models contained valve/tube pre-amps and are not SS like the MG line.

I think the earlier Valvestate line sounds better than the re-vamped AVT line of amps.

I still use my Valvestate amp in my home office. Turn up the mid/contour control and you'll get more than just scopped metal tones. There's some great classic rock tones in there too.

I had the original 8080 1x12 combo which had a single 12AX7 for the lead channel only. The clean channel I remember as being pretty horrible but the lead channel wasn't too bad. I actually liked it better than a JCM800 combo I had for a while. That amp was so horrible that I still shudder at the memory from time to time.

Yeah, the AVT series really weren't all that bad. My friend had one and I jammed on it a lot. I really liked it.
