Marshall Valvlestate 8080

I recently acquired my old valvestate 1x12 combo that I left @ my parents house years ago. This thing ain't bad! It sounds pretty 'tubey'. I'm very impressed and it definitely has that Marshall vide going on. Sounds killer for thrash metal & the like. :headbang:

Re: Marshall Valvlestate 8080

I agree with your remarks about Marshall vibe and suitability for thrash metal and scooped overdriven sounds in general. (That is where the Contour control comes into its own.) In my opinion, the description, "tubey", is stretching credulity a little too far.

I had one for quite a few years. I ran a Zoom 3030 through it on the clean channel. It got me through a lot of choons!

The 8080/VS100 early Valvestates etc kicked ass. The things are reliable as hell and sound good.

Screw Tubey. I don't care if it has a hamster wheel and a carrot on a string on the inside. I don't listen to "tube" I listen to ROCK :headbang:

Re: Marshall Valvlestate 8080

Does anyone who played with an 8080, think you can get glose to the Pantera / Dimebag sound with one ?

I think you could get close. Funkfingers mentioned the contour control. It's a really big mid sweep. And there's Plenty of gain on tap. I might try to dial that sound in this weekend and record some clips.

I repaired an old valvestate (cant remember the model) and i found a 12ax7 preamp tube in it. Do all valvestates have this, or only some of them?

The first few generations did. I think the one that says "Valvestate 2000" does not.

The tube does actually play a part in the sound. I took the stock tube out of an 8240 and replaced it with one of the Red Jet City Retrovalves and it added more gain.

I just replied to a similar thread earlier.

I just replaced the original 12AX7 with a GT 12AX7-C in my Valvestate 8240. I believe there was SIGNIFICANT improvement. More gain than the stock tube, and a "better" sound overall.

Twenty bucks well spent.

Re: Marshall Valvlestate 8080

Put a mullard reissue in my dad's valvestate 2000...huge improvement. Not as compressed and still breaks up in all the right places...added a more defined low end.
