What do you want to do? The VM is directed toward more vintage Marshall tones, the JVM has more modern gain structures (OD1 & OD2) but has a great clean channel (Fender tone stack) and a pretty good Plexi channel (Crunch).

The JVM is more versatile but if your tastes lie with 4-holer Plexi stuff the VM is yer amp.

I would go JVM 410 2x12 just for the versatility never played one though.

I've played the Vintage Modern, but not the JVM. After some tweaking and getting used to the controls on the VM, I really liked it, but then again, I'm into the old Marshall tones (like Scorch said) versus some of the newer stuff.

The VM was my main gigging amp for a few years. You CAN do a lot with it... but as with any old-school styled single channel amp (two modes, but because of the jump in gain stage between them the volume difference makes it difficult to use as two channels) you have to work for your tones. If you want it'll do most things up to hard rock, but to get into metal territory you'd be needing a pedal.

VERY nice and dynamic amp though. Great for cleaning up with the volume control on your guitar.

On the other hand, the JVM has the extreme multi-channel versatility, and the capability for high gain... but imo it loses out in the medium gain stakes.

So I guess... it depends very heavily on your specific needs.

VintageModern for me I think. Although the JVM410 has oodles of options, I prefer the simpler options on the VM.

That pretty much sums it up.

Vintage Modern is more my style. The JVM has some good tones in there but alot of it would be unused if I owned it. I also find the JVM to be a bit buzzy, not horrid, but there.

I feel like the JVM is their attempt to gun for the Mesa crowd and get everything out of one amp.

It has a ton of different tones and you can get any genre out of it... but nothing about it really "wows" me.

The Vintage Modern seems more like their attempt to compete with the modern Orange stuff (Purple tolex...rad!) and recall the tones that got them where they are. As a dude with a bunch of tube amps from the 60's and a bunch of cabinets from the 70's, I would go with the raw simplicity and solid "core" tone of the Vintage Modern.

So in a nutshell... JVM will do lots of styles, tones and gain levels without really excelling at any one of them... the Vintage Modern will behave like an old Marshall should. Hope that helps :smokin:

I would definitely go Vintage Modern - because I am an old fart whose tastes in gear are largely shaped by my love of 70s rock.

I can see the appeal of multi channel-switching versatility, particularly for those who want to go from pristine clean to all-out filth, but I tend to live in the middle ground of broken-up cleans to crunch, riding the guitar volume and with the occasional boost from an OD pedal.

I am actually on the lookout for a used VM head, but if I score one and keep it I'll probably have to part with one of my other 3 Marshalls if I am to remain married :smack:

I did the Marshall factory tour last year and the guy who showed us around said the JVMs are Marshall's best-selling amp range. Apparently the one thing they sell the most of is 4x12 cabs.

I like the JVM 410H. I didn't find it very buzzy at all, i fact I feel like there is a certain smoothness to much of that amp's crunch and lead tones, but at times it could be overly compressed and there is not enough detail or sparkle.

I haven't played a vintage modern but internet vids done with the vintage modern cab sound a lot brighter and more open, a little fizzier (in that greenback way for sure) especially in the higher gain mode (what is that called on the VM? High sensitivity channel or something?).

The DSL50 also had a lot of top end and presence... and so I think my taste for that amp would make more more of a Vintage Modern guy, but I don't think I could decide between the two without switching cabs. I'd like to try a JVM with greenbacks and VM with v30s.

Well, seeing as how I own a JVM410H stack.......It suits my style of music better.

The vintage Modern for me likely. That many knobs on the JVM scares me. I would probably get lost just setting it up and dialing in the tone I want. I have seriously considered pulling the trigger on Vintage Modern as a back up to my Jubilee. It would be more useful for gigging than my four holer volume wise and I like the dynamics without changing channels or stomping on pedals.

However, another factor here is that the VM is a KT66 amp. The JVM is an EL34 amp. I def prefer EL34s for Marshall tones.

Think of the JVM as four different single channel amps in a box. It's really not difficult to operate the thing. Save configuring the foot switch and assigning the FX loop to a specific channel you wouldn't really even need the manual.

Two things:

1. The JVM just because it has an awesome green and orange channel. I don't care a whole lot for the red channel.

2. If the JVM had a Vintage Modern channel, I'd own one.
