Marshall vs100 a good solid state amp?

tube amp ain't gonna happen for me, being as i play at home only, and mostly what i have tested out doesn't get the tones at low enough volumes. got a modeler (valvetronix) already. i want a good solid state that i can be happy with to just plug and play instead of tweaking on the vox all the time. i find myself ''playing'' with the vox too much and not actually practicing. not getting rid of the vox because it is fun, and i would spend up to $800. yes, i know i can get a tube for that much, and believe me i would rather, but i'm being realistic here. what i was able to do in the demo room with the classic 30, mesa F30, dsl, deluxe, etc.... ain't happening in the den. thanks in advance for any input..

I used to own the VS102R Version which is the equivalent of what your referring to but with (2) 12 inch speakers. I only sold it because I wanted to upgrade to something tube. I would recommend it because I personally found it to be one of the better sounding solidstate amps in comparison to others I tried before settling on it. All I have to say is don't get anything from the Marshall MG Series........ :earl: :cussing:

what about the Fender Blues Jr. Light enough to carry around your house, quiet enough to play in your house and great tone, which is good in any house...
Sorry I don't know anything about the vs100, so I had to throw in some Fender stuff.
Rock On!

Re: Marshall vs100 a good solid state amp?

i did try the blues jr. i don't know maybe it was my noobishness to tube amps, but i just couldn't get it to sound right. liked the peavey and mesa much better. i'm not playing any hardcore metal or anything, just basically some 80's hair type stuff and some blues. i have heard the jr. can do that pretty well, but just something about it didn't sit well with me.

and as for the recommendations to stay away from the mg series. not the first time i've heard that and i did play one. the avt's sounded better to me, but i have read that the older vs were favorable over the avt's, just haven't found one to play.

If you're just playing in your house, look at a Spider 50 watt version, either 112 or 210 configuration.

Yes- that is a good amp! My friend has a Marshall VS 100, I've played it quite a bit.. It is about 10 years old. If I'm not mistaken it has one per-amp tube that he has never had to change. It is a single 1X12 Black-Back speaker in it.

I can vouch and say that it sounds pertty darn good. It has a 2 button footswitch 1 button for Clean or Overdrive, One button for Overdrive1 or OverDrive2. It can sound good as a bedroom amp or just practicing. I used it twice trying out for bands and it was plenty loud enough for hard rock-80's metal , pretty good tones too. It weighs about 40 lbs.
Overall I give it a thumbs up.

It's actually one of the few solid state amps that I wouldn't mind playing. Definately worth a try. Add to your list the Peavey Transtube Prowler (the one with black and silver cosmetics) and pick the one you like the best. :)

Re: Marshall vs100 a good solid state amp?

I used to have the head version and it was actually one of the best SS/hybrid amps I've ever used. I definitely wouldn't mind playing through one in a pinch. Good speakers helped, too.

Re: Marshall vs100 a good solid state amp?

Yes it's good unless youn need a warm-sounding tube clean this or blues that. It is for raw biting metal and it does the job pretty well IMO. Considering volume it is capable of either some night whispers or biting your head off :D

Re: Marshall vs100 a good solid state amp?

A lot of people, myself included, prefer the Blues Jr to have different (better, IMO) tubes than the originals. Unfortunately, you can't really try out new tubes on an amp you don't own.

For a solid state amp, I was really impressed with the Roland Cube series. They're a lot of amp in a small package. Good price, too.

If you're looking for a great analog solid state amp, definitely check out Tech 21. I recently bought a Trademark 60 and I absolutely love it. For home use only the Trademark 10 may suffice. Check out the clips on their site. Great tones and very versatile. Very nicely built too.
