yea i was playing around with my dads martin the other day and for some reason they sounded all bright and twinkle twang and colorful sounding, i asked him why is was sounding like that, he said he put some martin strings on it

he should stick to the elixirs and ernie ball earthwoods are pretty good too

Whats wrong with sounding bright and colourful!

Re: Martin Acoustic Strings SUCK

I have to take Martin's side on this. I've always used either the Marquis or SP's and never had any problem with them. They sound great on my D-28 so that's what I'm sticking with. The only other brand I'd consider are Dean Markley.

Re: Martin Acoustic Strings SUCK

That's funny, I love Martin SP .012s on my Alvarez. I've tried Phosphor Bronze, Dean Markley, Elixir, etc, but I really prefer the plain old SPs. I do have the same experience with them being really bright brand new, but they mellow very nicely and mine always last at least 6 months without getting too dull as long as I wipe the sweat off. And I play that Alvarez pretty often. I did like the Elixirs, but I found that I almost wanted to change them faster than the Martins when the coating starts to fuzz up. The Dean Markleys were decent too, but I found that the Martins keep their life longer. I've never had an SP string break on me, either. Later!

Here's another voice in defense of Martin strings. I've been using SP4100's on my D-35 for the last few years and have been quite happy with them. I also use D'Addario EJ16's.

I tried Elixirs a couple of times and disliked their tone and their feel.

Correction to my other post, those are Martin Marquis strings... Oops :D

Re: Martin Acoustic Strings SUCK

I just put a set of Marqius on my Alvarez and wasn't impressed at first...too bright and "lacey" (always a problem on this guitar). The "welcome to fairyland" comment was a good assessment. However, after they dulled a bit, they actually give my Alvarez a "meat and potatoes" sound it never had before. I can finally strum a Stones tune without it sounding like a Renaissance festival. Maybe they are better suited for brighter guitars?

That's exactly my experience with them. They're really bright and lacey and first, but once they mellow (in a few days) they sound great and keep that sound for a LONG time. My six month old set that's on my Alvarez right now is still woody and shimmering. But they do have that break-in period where you're just like, "What?!"
