Martin, Taylor, Other and Why?

Re: Martin, Taylor, Other and Why?

Martin all the way for me simply because of the tone. Nothing compares to my ears, love my CEO-7.

Taylors take the cake for necks--play and feel the most like an electric.

I love the strum sounds with a pick on Gibsons--J45s, AJs, SJs, Hummingbirds, etc. But the necks feel off to me on Gibsons. For budget, I would go with the Epiphone Masterbilts over an actual Gibson.

Breedlove has made some really cool guitars but they always seemed to be overpriced IMO.

Ovations are super cool but uncomfortable to play without a strap when sitting down.

Tacomas are cool guitars, especially their Cedar Top Chiefs.

Re: Martin, Taylor, Other and Why?

I own a Taylor acoustic. Its pretty good but my dream guitar would be this Gibson I tried in a store a while back. I am going to guess it was a j-185. I cant remember. But it was a lot of money. $5K canadian i think. i cant bring myself to spend that money on an instrument. I am not that good a player. :-)

Re: Martin, Taylor, Other and Why?

It's weird, because I love my Gibson electrics, but I honestly have never played a Gibson acoustic that I've wanted to buy, new or vintage.

Friends in high school and college had them; a couple of pros I knew that gigged around town had them, and those guitars just never impressed me.

I have my Taylor, and it's good...but I like Martins the best.

It's good that we have so many choices.

Re: Martin, Taylor, Other and Why?

I've owned a Seagull S6 in Cedar and I currently own a Taylor 114CE. The Taylor is a great "working" guitar that I can take any where and not worry about beating it up a bit. I liked the tone of the Seagull a lot, especially for recording.

I like Martin's OO-body (I'm fond of the Clapton model) or a Gibson J45 type. For a Nicer Taylor I'm fond of the 614 series.

And... lest we forget our friend Frank Falbo makes truly spectacular acoustics. I'd probably just go to him and tell him what I want, and have him create something amazing.

Re: Martin, Taylor, Other and Why?

I was browsing an acoustic buying guide from Taylor today and was surprised to find out that Taylor indeed offers laminates as well, as much as it is a very high-end brand of acoustic.

That got me thinking, how important is the impact of back and sides to the overall tone? Does it matter much if the top is solid while the back and sides are laminated?

I am not really an acoustic player so maybe members with more experience with Martins, Taylors, Guilds, etc. can educate me on this.

Re: Martin, Taylor, Other and Why?

Well, the very best instruments use solid everything. The most important thing is the top, but the sides and back certainly contribute to the tone. Laminates are more durable and resistant to feedback. If I really loved a guitar, though, the fact that the back and sides were laminates wouldn't stop me from getting it.

Re: Martin, Taylor, Other and Why?

Cool acoustic! Who made it? What are the specs?

Thank you mincer!
is a custom shape from my luthier http://www.utopiacustomshop.it/
specs are fruit of experimentation and deliberately go against classic tone wood options!

Spruce top, rosewood back and sides, mahogany neck, quilt maple fingerboard!
It mounts gotoh electric guitar tuners ( more mass) and right now two banjo tuners!
