Mastering

Re: Mastering

I assume we skip all the redbook coding and such here and you are only talking about mastering say a single track for mp3 format... then I normally use something like:

Transparent EQ
Compressor
Coloring EQ
(DeEsser maybe)
Limiter

I don't remember exactly but something like that.

And then bounce the track with Dither applied, to mp3 or wav depends on what it will be used for.

Re: Mastering

I use Wavelab with Waves plugins in this order.

6 band Renaissance EQ
Linear Phase Multiband Compressor
Peak Master (to set the peak output under digital zero)
Waves L2

It's hard to find good mastering on a budget so for most of the stuff I post to myspace and other sites I just do it here.

Re: Mastering

I'll post the actual plugs when I open a session and check exactly what I used, but it's generally...

PSP for compression
Sonalksis for EQ and multiband comp
Izotope Ozone lightly used for widening/volume
Cubase Limiter

Re: Mastering

on the PC, I've got so many VSTs I'll just go through several until I find a fit, often just using free things like the classic compressor and limiter, Electri-Q, G clipper, G multi. sometimes I nail it, sometimes I fail miserably. I still don't have the hang of how much clipping to allow.

I have a few snagged programs that I won't mention - I usually feel a bit guilty for using them or telling other people that's what I used if I didn't pay for it. Hopefully all of what's mentioned here are things people actually bought.

on the mac, for my next recording, I'll probably just use what's stock in Logic Express (which is legit) to eq, compress, and limit.

Re: Mastering

Thanks for the input guys! I'm trying to approach mastering as part of the whole process instead of a step at the end, so I'm creating a master chain that I'll use as a template on all my tracks and go from there.

that brings up a good point - some people like to mix with a compressor on the master bus, to be able to account for the changes that compression would have on levels of instruments after a song is mixed.
