Matamp/Electric

Well. As some of you know I am looking for a new amp. I think I've decided that I wont really be happy until I get a Matamp or Electric. Because of their insane(to my standards) prices in Canada. I am thinking I will just get a cab and run my current head through it for the time being until I can raise enough funds for a head too. I am really in love with the sound that Matamps and Electrics give which is loud, loud, loud, loud, loud, loud and loud. If you can suggest something cheaper with the same tone, by all means go for it. What do you all think of this idea? Good? Bad? Has anyone here played a Matamp or Electric GTO or close to it.

Re: Matamp/Electric

Why not get the amp and wait to get the cab? That'll give you the oportunity to try it with a few different speakers/cabs to see which sounds best to you.

Yeah, I suppose that would be a better Idea. Thing is I am in an active(well, writting a demo right now) and the current cab I have certainly isnt rated to handle a 80 or 120 watt amp. Your idea does sound more appealing though because then I could get a feel for speakers and etc.

Re: Matamp/Electric

I wish I had a matamp GTL at this point because they sound awesome - they are 80 watts so you can crank up tube sound. 120 watts via Electric Amps is probably too much for my type of sound.

Unfortunately I cant afford my dream amp either, so for the far future I am considering buying used:

orange rockerverb 50 head (about $1200 on ebay)
Marshall JCM 800 2204 50 watter - from the 80s or the reissue (about $950)

I know those Mattamps cost over $2000 which is insane when you think about it. other options for an amp head I was considering that are pretty cheap are:

mesa boogie caliber .50+
PEAVEY VTM-120

their sound is in a similar range to the above amps and cost a fraction of the price. I am more concerned about theft so I am probably not gonna splurge until I live in a nice area and can afford insurance for my gear.

Re: Matamp/Electric

Matamps can be had for well under 2000 used. And only the new GTO's/GTL's are 80watt anything pre-2005(I think) is 120 watts.

And yes Daisy, I am right outside. 30 minutes into Halifax.

Re: Matamp/Electric

I had a go with those Orange Rockerverbs. On thier own, they are truly awesome, but once i tried a big muff infront, it just lost it. It might have just been the way i had it dialed in, but my Marshall just takes anything you throw at it, with very little tweaking.

That said, I have had a rip on a Matamp GTL, the 120watt version. Until I own this amp, I will never be truly satisfied. It was simply he most bone crushingly heavy yet warm and cosy amp i have ever encountered.

I don't think it was your settings.....my Muff will not jive with either of my Oranges.....for some reason it feels like there's a huge gap in the midrange.

I want the 80w because I'm not big into pedal fuzz.....I prefer the sound an amp makes when single notes are on the verge of overdrive and chords send it over the top but still retain the full sound of the guitar.....now that's f*cking huge.

Re: Matamp/Electric

awesome thread man - hope people keep adding...^^ that matamp description of ideal sound personal requirements is great!!

Thats pretty much what I gather, anyone that has played a Matamp and digs it knows they wont really be satisfied until they own one.

Re: Matamp/Electric

Matamps are cool. Not only the sound, but also the design. Pure mojo! A shame they're that expensive, as you've already mentioned. If they're as loud as my Laney, You definately can't crank those suckers at home, lol. My amps practically get no use at all because of the volume, people weren't kidding when saying 50/100 tube watts were too loud for home use without an attenuator, lol. Heck, even when I have the half switch on my Marshall turned on (turns it into 25w) it's too loud.

Re: Matamp/Electric

MatAmps RULE!!!!!!!! the price is pretty much justified if you ask me. it's all handwork.

the designe is realy well thought out, the sound is immense and very very rich in harmonics.
the moment i can spend that kind of cash on one, i'm getting the LX. i was blown away by it, through the tiny MatAmp 4x12
i spoke to Hayden (sales & assembly, among other things) and Dave (design & assembly) in london and they are top notch dudes.

Re: Matamp/Electric

I agree fully when you say the price is justified, I know the quality is extremely high and the sound is amazing(IMHO). For me it's still exspensive, but very worth it.

Re: Matamp/Electric

i havent said they're not expencive... just that their price is justified ;)
