I need help finding a pedal to produce a particular sound I have in my head. That sound would be a 1x12 Chieftain with it's EL34's sculpted with the master volume and brilliance controls into that big open smooth but crunchy overdrive voice with it's big bouquet of complex overtones. I used to have a Chieftain but it was overkill for me so I sold it. (I'm just playing to amuse myself at home lately).
I'm using a couple of nice silverface Champs with Kendrick/Weber 4 ohm replacement speakers and 12at7 preamp tubes for a sweeter sound. They don't break up like ax7's, but I plan on getting my sound with pedals. And my combination of Boss SD-1 and DF-2 isn't giving me what I want - though they're great for what they are.
So I'm going by sound clips and YouTube vids to make a choice, and have some possibilities in mind, including: Fulltone PlimSoul, Subdecay Liquid Sunshine, Catalinbread Formula No. 5, and the CMATMOD Signa Drive. Which pedal do you think would get me closest to my old Chieftain overdrive tone?
One good candidate might be a Matchless HotBox. I used to have one, but sold it too. I'm not looking to spend quite that much.
