Matt Guitar Murphy needing new pups

Hi all,

Cort Matt Guitar Murphy with agathis body, great maple top. Pickups a but lifeless, mud up easily. Same shape as a PRS. Gibson length neck 24+(whatever...).

I know there is a combo here that many people like in the PRS, trying to find out what it is AND whatever anyone else might recommend.

I play everything except metal. Classic rock, country, pop, versatility is key...

Thanks,

Joe

first choice:

'59 neck (4-wire)
C5 bridge

second choice:

alnico II Pro neck
JB bridge

either way, wire them with the PRS combos

good luck and enjoy

cheers,

My faves would include:

59N & 59B = vintage early 60's tone, like Clapton's Cream era SG or Larry Carlton's 335
Jazz N & 59B = slightly clearer neck pickup tone with less bass and more harmonics
Jazz N & JB = big dynamic tone from the bridge pickup, Jeff Beck's Freeway Jam tone.
Jazz Nor 59N & Custom 5 = brighter than the JB, more open in the mids and almost as strong.
Antiquitys = like a real 1957 or 58 Gibson paf with 50 year old magnets
Seth Lovers = like a brand new 1957 or 58 Gibson paf with brand new magnets

Thanks Tone and Lew,

But what is the deal with a guitar that needs a bit more oomph than an a les Paul. Which pups should I put in to beef it up compared to a paul?

Thanks,

Joe

Well, I can only tell you what I like, and if you're looking for something stronger than stock Gibson humbuckers ( like the '57 Classics or something similar ), then of those I mentioned I'd go for the 59N & JB or Jazz & JB. If you've tried the JB and found it to be not to your liking and perhaps a little hard or the mids to bright, but almost to you liking, then try the C5...it's sort of like a JB lite! (sort of...)

Alot of guys like the Custom as a bridge pickup in a Les Paul too and it's similar to the C5 but uses a ceramic magnet = more mids and slightly sizzlier highs than the C5, IMO.

Personally, any stronger than a 59N for a neck pickup gets muddy to my ears. I'd stick with the 59N or if you've tried it and would like something with about 5% less bass and 5% more upper harmonic chime, and maybe 5% cleaner tone but still ballsy, then the Jazz N would be a good choice. Good luck! Lew
