i was listening to matthew sweet's release "100% Fun." whoa, what incredible guitar tone. sounds like fender amps. he gets this incredibly thick, warm, distortion/overdrive that sort of borders on fuzz to my ears, but with tons of note definition. very spongy and super cool. does anyone have any info on the gear? i did an internet search and couldn't come up with much. the cd artwork shows him with a hollowbody or semi hollowbody of some sort. thanks!

Re: matthew sweet's tone, WOW and HOW?

Yeah, I always enjoyed the guitar tones from this record... dunno how to achieve 'em though...

Re: matthew sweet's tone, WOW and HOW?

I suppose it's possible that he's layering clean amps with fuzzy ones...Just a shot in the dark.

Re: matthew sweet's tone, WOW and HOW?

+1 on his awesome tones....I love them throughout his catalog....I too, unfortunately, am unsure of how he achieves it...thanks for the reminder ...I'll now be listening to him on the way to work tomorrow!

Matthew Sweet is an amazing artist.

Total 'vintage head' for both gear & songwriting...

Pretty sure that Brendon O'Brien produced '100% Fun' and hes a big "vintage" head too & no slouch when it comes to capturing tones. Safe to say that the studio probably looked like We Buy Guitars or whatever your favorite vintage shop is.

What's REALLY cool is the stuff he did w/Susanna Hoffs & Mike Myers for the Austin Powers movie... house band was called "Ming Tea" & I think there's a few cuts on the soundtrack.

I don't have that record, but the description sounds like what an exciter does.

And yes, playing the same guitar into different rigs at the same time, or record pre-amp and send through amps later, then mix the amps, is also a real possibility.

Re: matthew sweet's tone, WOW and HOW?

I know he digs voxes and has recently been using a 65 London. Not sure about 100% fun, but Girlfriend is one of my fave records and that's pretty fender-heavy.

Re: matthew sweet's tone, WOW and HOW?

Love the song "Sick of Myself". Can't find anything on the web for a 100% sure answer but my guess is Vox also.

Re: matthew sweet's tone, WOW and HOW?

thanks for the comments. i can't believe there isn't more info out there. i found a short mix magazine article but it didn't go into any specifics really. surprising.

moose, yea, brendon o'brien produced 100% fun.

Not really surprising to me since most people reading Mix... especially at that time generally have (or had anyway) a clue about how records are made & what gear is used.

But yeah, safe to assume that the guitars were likely split out to a few amps and recorded simultaneously. Pretty standard technique actually. I should pull that record out & give it a spin.

I've seen him with all sorts of guitars & amps over the years...

Likely more about being a tone-head rather then any specific piece of gear.

Cool shot I found via Google...

He does have a great sound. I was expecting a Swart-he's on their website...

Anyone know what pedals are on the floor?

This room's interior has not been designed by his wife...

haha, true...and the opposite of pretty much every gear room/home studio posted on the gear page.

Royal Albert and custom finished London combo for the COLOSSAL WIN!

Re: matthew sweet's tone, WOW and HOW?

So I just gave '100% Fun' a spin for the first time in whats probably a few years... WOW. If there's ever a record that's a prime education in how to arrange guitar parts for recording this would be it. Or at least one of 'em...

Tons of layers.

At least 4-5 overlapping parts on every song.

On "Sick of Myself" I'm hearing at least two main L/R guitars... there's another Marshally guitar (or two) that comes in on the chorus playing big open chords... plus all the lead & fill parts of which there are several.

For "We're the Same" besides the other wall of guitars, that acoustic sounds like its miked up but also has a magnetic pickup running out to a small grindy amp like a tweed or old Gibson/Supro etc.

Lots of Leslie guitar on the record too...

And looking at the credits, both Brendon O'Brien & Richard Lloyd (of Television fame) are credited with LOTS of guitar work. I know that several years ago, Richard was touring with his own project through some clubs and had an AC30, Marshall and a few pedals. Like a tube screamer, phaser & maybe a delay. Nothing terribly special.

There's an art to layering guitars...

You can't just use the same sound for a half-dozen parts. Ends up as mush... gotta use different planks, amps, pedals & recording techniques (mics & placement) to allow things to poke through.

Re: matthew sweet's tone, WOW and HOW?
