Maxon OD808

So, I've got a tubescreamer right now, but it really doesnt do what I want as far as giving me a little gain boost without coloring the channel too much. It works great by itself but I just dont dig it in front of my Laney's high gain channel.

I've heard good things about the Maxon being very transparent and that is what I want. What do you guys think?

I play mostly metal in drop-c and ambient rock stuff in standard.

Re: Maxon OD808

the 808 is one of my favorite off-the-shelf ODs

it is more transparent than a TS9, but it IS still a tubescreamer

Re: Maxon OD808

My tubescreamer just seems to make my tone fizzy when I put it in front instead of boosting the gain a little.

Yep, that's exactly what I thought, and had it laying around for years, untill asked here what was the big deal about these things and people reffered me to John Spina(Stratdeluxer) now, this inseperable part of my tone, my holy grail.

that's unusual ... tubescreamers are warm, and the usual complaint about them is the pronounced mid hump

the OD808 has less of a mid hump, BTW

Re: Maxon OD808

The 808 is the best Screamer clone, it sucks some tone in bypass, but not much. It's got a higher mid-peak than most screamers, so it's less annoying. But it's still a Tubescreamer.

Consider also the Maxon OD9 Pro+ (It's newer, more expensive than the regular OD9, and has a lot more mids) but be aware that it's more prone to feedback. Again, it's still a Tubescreamer...

I use a Maxon SD9 with the gain turned down, makes a perfectly transparent overdrive, and can be cranked for more distortion and fun. The SD9 doesn't "color" the tone as much when you turn down the tone knob, it even has a bit of a mid-scoop.

Xotic BB Preamp is also very, very nice, more transparent than the Maxon IMHO....

Re: Maxon OD808

the maxon OD808 sounds different because it's not actually an 808 or a TS9 it's a version of the TS10. no idea why they call it an 808.
