Almost made a pretty big booboo...

But then spotted my mistake when clearly 2 humbuckers were not going to fit...


Whew that would of been a disaster!

The one thing you make sure you do already have around for making a scratch body shape is your neck. That way you can precisely get scale length/bridge placement.......the most important aspect

Neck is already done and that’s partly tip-off that something was wrong. I’m triple check the scale length measurement as we speak.

It also allows you to look at the attachment area too......where you want the body wood to extend to, cutaways, etc etc.

For scale length I tend to measure to the 12th fret centre, then physically move the ruler measuring that same distance onward.

Yes, I did the 12th fret trick. Then I realized I did my sketch on the wrong side of the board. So I’m back doing it again...

It’s one piece of black walnut but I plan to glue top/bottom together to give me the thickness. I can then do all the routing before I glue them together so once it’s done I’m not trying to make pathways between the boards. Hopefully this will save me some time and allow me to take advantage of the slopes sides.

I foresee a long day of shaping and sanding coming up.

Orbital sanders and the flap-like sanding dics you can attach to 5" grinders make shaping a lot easier.

And new + quality router bits greatly reduce the amount of sanding on the sides and on the roundover.

I have none of those fancy tools you speak of... I have a hand rasp tool, plane, dremel, and saws. I'm checking to see if there are any other tools hiding around I might make use of.
